The duties for this position include extensive daily interactions with and timely responses to a wide diversity of individuals and groups, including resident and citizen groups, engineers, architects, builders, contractors, and other development professionals, business owners and managers, elected and appointed officials, other Town staff members, and members of the public, including an in-person review of paper documents and materials. The Planner must be professional and responsive and provide excellent customer service in all circumstances.
This position is required to work from the office, at Town Hall, during normal business hours. The typical schedule for this position is Monday – Friday, from 8am to 5pm. This position is expected to attend night and weekend meetings as assigned by the Director or otherwise appropriate.
The Planner I (NON-EXEMPT) is an entry level role. Work performed at this level is more routine. The person in this position exercises technical and administrative tasks in support of the Town’s Community Development Department.
The Planner II (EXEMPT) is a journey level role. Work performed at this level is more complex in nature. This individual has fewer routine tasks and exercises more independent judgment with less guidance in support of the Town’s Community Development Department.
The Planner III (EXEMPT) is a senior level role. This role differs from a Planner II in that the incumbent will manage projects and handle complex problems and issues. This individual is typically considered a subject matter expert. This role receives minimal supervision of the Town’s Community Development Department and may lead/mentor/supervise junior staff.
SUPERVISION RECEIVEDThe Planner I works under the direct supervision of the Community Development Director.
The Planner II works under the general supervision of the Community Development Director.
The Planner III works under minimal supervision of the Community Development Director.

The list below is intended to be illustrative of the responsibilities of the position and not all encompassing. The required duties for this position may be amended at any time, depending on the needs of the Town and the Community Development Department. The person in this position will be expected to:
- Serve as the initial contact to a wide variety of groups and individuals with inquiries about the Town’s Land Use Code, Comprehensive Plan, zoning regulations, and development processes and procedures. Review and respond to inquiries quickly, accurately, and professionally in person, or by phone, by email, or web-based platforms when requested.
- Assist the Community Development staff with review of development application process referrals and the establishment of schedules and deadlines with applicants, project planners and other Town staff.
- Play lead role in the execution of Town projects such Comprehensive Plans, Transportation Plans, Impact Fee studies, and other key Town initiatives
- Represent the Town and provide significant guidance to the Planning Commission.
- Attend Town Board of Trustee meetings
- Review, monitor, coordinate, and approve a variety of plans, licenses, and permits for compliance with applicable codes, regulations and requirements. Interact with other Town staff as needed to accomplish this.
- Act as the Planner on Duty, which requires direct, in person communication with a wide variety of groups and individuals, including resident and citizen groups, engineers, architects, builders, contractors, and other development professionals, business owners and managers, elected and appointed officials, other Town staff members, and members of the public. This position is required to work in the office, at Town Hall, during normal business hours.
