Correctional Officer I - Temporary Aide - Canon Facilities. This posting will be used to fill temporary aide vacant positions in Canon City. These positions will work at multiple locations throughout the Canon City area.

Terms of EmploymentTemporary Aides are limited pursuant to the Colorado constitution. A temporary employee may work no more than nine (9) months in a 12-month period. The 12-month period is defined as a rolling 12-month period that begins with the first day of work for the temporary assignment.
Description Of JobThe Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) prison facilities throughout the state. Correctional Officers support the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry. Officers communicate professionally with inmates, families, coworkers, and the public; work as part of a cohesive team; and manage a diverse inmate population.
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Work directly with inmates in a locked facility
- Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas
- Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required)
- Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles
- Operate a variety of mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms
- Control movement of inmates through the daily schedule
- Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles
- Monitor visiting areas
- Conduct formal, informal and emergency counts
- Cross check and maintain movement logs
- Conduct searches for contraband (can include canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches)
- Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards; inspect inmate mail and property
- Respond to emergencies (fights, medical emergencies, fires, escapes) using established protocols
- Follow tool and key control procedures; ensure proper storage and documentation
- Attend roll call and document incidents using established reporting practices
- Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors
Positions are subject to working additional hours and/or shifts to maintain safety and security of facilities that are open 24/7.
Minimum QualificationsHigh School Diploma or a GED certificate.

- Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States. CDOC uses e-Verify. CDOC does not sponsor non-residents of the United States.
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Possess a valid and unrestricted driver’s license
- Former State employees with disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination must disclose information on the application
- Have no felony convictions as defined by specified laws; not allowed to work with offenders if engaged in sexual abuse
- Successful completion of a background investigation; provide disposition of charges if applicable
- All offers contingent upon a health screening
- Successful completion of Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, including Defensive Tactics
Defensive Tactics requirements include physical abilities such as lifting, takedowns, and use of force as trained; exposure to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training; willingness to work all shifts and holidays; ability to travel and transport inmates; TB screening required for all new employees.
