Public Works - Fleet Mechanic III

Perform highly skilled mechanical repair and diagnostic work in the maintenance and/or repair of Park County vehicles and equipment in the Public Works shops and in the field.

Essential Duties
  • Perform preventative maintenance work to include changing oil and filters, grease and lube service, change‑balance‑rotate tires, and other filter replacements as well as any other intensive technical requirements.
  • Perform shop cleanup tasks such as sweeping, washing down, and putting tools and equipment in assigned locations when finished using them.
  • Painting and placing of decals.
  • Inspect and repair vehicles and equipment to comply with Public Works and DOT (Department of Transportation) standards and regulations.
  • Document job time, vehicle hours and miles, parts used per job, parts needed, and any repairs accomplished. Provide this needed important information to proper personnel.
  • Help provide field service in emergency situations.
  • Repair, rebuild, replace and diagnose problems in a wide variety of County equipment such as heavy and light duty trucks, tractors, snowplow equipment, sand spreaders, graders, loaders, dozers specialty type equipment, and various small engine equipment and tools.
  • Repair, rebuild or replace individual components of complex pieces of specialty equipment to include hydraulic pumps and motors, crushers and conveyors, electrical and generation units as well as any other typr of equipment.
  • Operate all classes of vehicles and equipment to troubleshoot, test, and confirm repairs needed or that have been completed.
  • Design and fabricate parts and/or tools to complete a work assignment or project.
  • Performs welding and fabrication work, which may include cutting metal, fabricating components, or soldering metal components.
  • Perform all work and functions in a safe and conscientious manner.
  • Provide quality and consistency in all endeavors.
  • Participate in Emergency Support Functions.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Thorough in-depth knowledge of the design, role and function of diesel, gas, hydraulic, hydrostatic, electrical and mechanical type systems.
  • Ability to thoroughly diagnose and repair through the use of the latest technological equipment.
  • Ability to utilize the tools of the trade including wrenches, sockets, pliers, testers, screwdrivers, precision measurement tools, brake lathes, hydraulic and air presses, and required ancillary tools.
  • Ability to write, read and understand manuals, sketches, schematics, specifications and other shop related directions.
  • Ability to plan and estimate jobs within the scope of assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and produce quality work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers.
  • Preform diagnostics through sight, smell and sound.
  • Knowledge and skills in welding (stick, mig, tig), oxy acetylene equipment and plasma cutters.
  • Ability to provide guidance to Mechanic I and II.
  • Must pass a background checks, the pre‑employment drug test and motor vehicle record.
Schedule / Hours

Some evenings, weekends and holidays may be required. The normal work week is 40 hours. Overtime may be required for projects, emergencies and snow removal. Employees will report to their assigned shop or assigned work location and may be reassigned based upon needs of the Public Works Department. Operation hours are 6:00 am to 4:30 pm. Overtime may be approved or required by Fleet Manager or Director.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Graduation from an accredited vocational school in mechanics field is preferred or two years’ experience as a mechanic in the automotive, truck and heavy equipment industry
  • Ten years’ experience as a mechanic in the automotive, and heavy equipment industry is desired or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must possess a minimum Class B CDL. To achieve 50% or greater of pay range a Class A CDL is required.
  • Must pass background check

Six‑month probation:
At the end of the six‑month probation employees are required to possess a minimum of a Class B, or A CDL including tanker endorsement. CDL training available through Park County.
