Overview
The primary role for the lifeguard position with the Town of Berthoud is to ensure the safety of visitors to our aquatic facilities. The lifeguard will explain safety rules to patrons, warn them about unsafe situations, and enforce safety policies. Candidates will need to assess situations swiftly and make decisions regarding the safety of swimmers as well as perform various rescue skills with a team of lifeguards.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The below list is intended to be illustrative of the responsibilities of the position and not all encompassing. The Town may change these duties at any time.
- Prevention of any accidents by eliminating the hazard or hazardous behavior.
- Enforcing all rules involving pool policy and operations.
- Knowledge of all rules and justifications for the rules.
- Maintains a level of physical fitness appropriate to the demands of lifeguarding to fulfill any emergency procedures for any circumstance.
- Assists in the maintenance and care of the equipment, facilities, and environment including cleaning duties.
- Attends and participates in all required in-service trainings, clinics, workshops, and meetings.
- Informs supervisor of any disciplinary problems as necessary
- Flexibility to work weekdays, nights, weekends, evenings and some holidays
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other town employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, other town departments, and members of the community
- Performs any other related or similar duties as assigned.

- Occasionally works independently without direct supervision
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with co-workers, program participants, and the public
- Communicated effectively in both oral and written form with external and internal customers
- Ability to show sensitivity in dealing with all age groups, persons with disabilities, and a diverse population
- Basic computer knowledge
- Ability to understand and apply department procedures and policies
- Certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, CPR/AED, and First Aid for the professional Rescuer, which is required prior to first shift. (Certification can be provided for applicants.)
