Location: Leadville

Salary Grade: $30.00/hour for mechanic work; $24.00/hour for bus driving work. Excellent benefits included – health, dental, vision, 13 PTO days and 11 paid holidays!

Work Year: 210 days. follows the LCSDCalendar – most weeks are Monday-Thursday! (Driving is 4 hours x 4 days/week for 175 days; mechanic is 4 hours x 4 days/week PLUS 35 additional 8 hour days during breaks. Total compensation: $46, 200/annually. Paid by salary over 12 months.

Generally, bus routes run from 6:30-8:30am and 2:45-4:45 pm; specific route hours may vary. Mechanic work done between routes and on Fridays or school breaks, as arranged with the Supervisor. Mechanic time will include some time in July when the fleet is most available.

Bus Driver Work:

SUMMARY Drive students to and from school, abiding by all rules and regulations set forth by the federal and state government and the District.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Drive route. Manage student behavior and enforce discipline while enroute.
  • Maintain complete control of the vehicle and remain alert while enroute.
  • Drive out of town activity trips at night or on weekends.
  • Provide care and assistance to children when entering and exiting bus and when crossing streets.
  • Load and unload passengers in wheelchairs using lifts and safety devices.
  • Inspect bus before each trip to ensure bus is working properly.
  • Clean interior of the bus and the exterior windows.
  • Complete daily logs and paperwork.
  • Report breakdowns, emergencies, and delays to Transportation Department.
  • Perform emergency evacuation procedures twice yearly and on all out of town trips.
  • Attend in-service and receive physical.
  • Attend CPR and First Aid training class.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING High school diploma, GED, or equivalent vocational school or short term courses

EXPERIENCE No experience required. Previous truck or bus driving experience preferred.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT Driving and communication skills. Ability to work with students and individuals with special needs. Knowledge of pre-trip inspection procedures, back-up techniques, and mounting terrain driving skills preferred at hire; required within 2 months after hire. Operating knowledge of various school buses, equipment for individuals with disabilities, and chains preferred at hire; required within 2 months after hire.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS CDL license, Department of Transportation physical examination, and “B” license with P2-S endorsement required within 1-2 months after hire. CPR and First Aid certifications required within 3 months after hire. CDL required and training is provided. Must pass Federal DOT drug test.

SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY This job has no supervisory responsibilities; however, this position is responsible for supervising passenger conduct on the bus.

JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING Work is assigned by Transportation Director and/or Mechanic. Requires independent judgment to determine if bus is safe to operate, when and if route deviations are required, and when to utilize additional driving safety precautions. Additionally, independent judgment must be applied to determine appropriate type and severity of discipline for passengers. Decision making requires collaboration with Transportation Director, Mechanic, other drivers, teachers, principals, and coaches.

Work is guided by District Driver’s Handbook, driver judgment, supervisor’s directives, and state and federal traffic laws and regulations. Errors in decision making could lead to route delays, mechanical breakdowns, misjudging road conditions, traffic accidents, and inappropriate student discipline. Supervisor is occasionally involved in decision making.
