The Lead Registered Nurse (RN) provides professional, high quality, safe and efficient peri‑operative nursing care to patients as a registered nurse while also performing Lead RN duties in support of the ASC Nurse Manager. Roles include, but are not limited to, LEAD RN, circulating, scrubbing, and pre‑operative and post‑operative areas as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Evaluation of self‑practice in context with professional practice standards and relevant statutes and regulations.
- Acquire and maintain current knowledge in nursing practice.
- Obtain patients’ medical history and perform a physical assessment for assigned patients.
- Present the historical and physical data to the physician to aid in determining the diagnostic and therapeutic measures necessary to correct the patient’s problem.
- Initiate a patient education plan according to the individualized needs of the patient, as prescribed by Physician and/or practice policy, including patient and family instruction; explain procedures and treatments to patient to gain cooperation, understanding and allay apprehension.
- Coordinate and optimize patient flow from registration through discharge to ensure efficient flow and excellent patient experience.
- Proactively communicate and escalates department activities, actual or potential patient or team member concerns and provide supporting documentation to the ASC Nurse Manager.
- Coordinate and communicate ASC staff breaks, lunches, shift changes and after‑hours staffing to ensure continuity of patient care.
- Assist ASC Nurse Manager plan and develop staff work schedules and make recommendations for adjustment.
- Collect relevant documentation for CMS and inform manager of CMS compliance issues.
- Prepare the patient for the anticipated surgical procedure, including verifying informed consent signatures, completing a pre‑operative patient assessment, and performing any procedure or administering medications required to prepare the patient for surgery.
- Communicate with the circulating staff, the recovery room nurse, the anesthesia care provider and the surgeon to coordinate a safe and comfortable surgical experience. Participate in patient education, make nursing diagnoses and plan nursing care.
- Assess patient condition before, during and after the procedure to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
- Maintain sterile technique in the operating room to ensure patient safety.
- Supervise any unlicensed assistive personnel in the operating room.
- Ensure that postoperative physician orders are communicated to the recovery room nursing staff for implementation.
- Develop a plan of care and evaluate patient outcomes.
- Maintain a safe and comfortable environment for the patient.
- Assess and maintain the patient’s safety in recovering from anesthetic and surgical medications.
- Ensure that the patient understands their post‑operative care requirements.
- Collaborate with other peri‑operative nursing staff, anesthesia care providers and the surgeon.
- Assess patient outcomes.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Completion of accredited Registered Nursing Program from college or technical school.
- A minimum of 5 years RN experience in a hospital and/or surgery center setting preferred.
- One‑year pre‑operative and post‑operative experience highly preferred.
- Experience as a lead or charge nurse strongly preferred.
- Current, valid California Registered Nursing (RN) License required.
- Current ACLS and BLS required.
This position has no supervisory responsibility.
