Job Description & How to Apply Below
Division: SDI Biocarbon Solutions Overview
SDI Bio Carbon Solutions is seeking a high‑caliber Plant Electrical Engineer as we move through the critical commissioning and startup phase. This is a greenfield start‑up facility using innovative and proven technology together with our JV partner Aymium, to convert woody biomass into a direct carbon replacement in our steel‑making operations. This role is the technical backbone of our power distribution and automation systems.
You will transition the plant from construction to steady‑state operations, ensuring that all electrical systems are safe, reliable, and optimized for long‑term performance.
- Provide hands‑on engineering leadership during startups; troubleshoot complex equipment failures and refine process logic to minimize downtime.
- Oversee external contractors for electrical repairs, installations, and capital upgrades, ensuring strict adherence to safety and technical specifications.
- Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for Med‑Low‑voltage distribution, motor control centers (MCCs), and plant‑wide instrumentation.
- Assist in programming and troubleshooting PLC systems (Rockwell/Siemens) and HMI interfaces (RS View/Ignition/) to improve plant throughput.
- Develop and document standard operating procedures (SOPs) and repair/rebuild standards for the electrical maintenance team.
- Manage the full lifecycle of electrical capital projects, from initial P&t and budgeting to commissioning and final handover.
- Identify opportunities to reduce operating costs and improve the reliability of plant assets and labor utilization.
- Ability to work extra hours as needed to support production, shutdowns and emergency repairs.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited 4‑year institution or related.
- 3 years of experience in industrial power distribution, electrical systems design, and troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of power distribution, including switch gear and transformers, AC/DC motors, motor control and drives.
- Demonstrated ability to develop requirements, specifications, P&, and all else required to specify, plan, and execute process and equipment improvement projects.
- Expertise in NFPA 70E, arc flash mitigation, and OSHA Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) standards.
- Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems resulting from automation, communication, or HMI issues and implement strong corrective measures.
- Ability to work independently and as a team member across multiple disciplines with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Self‑starter with a desire to learn and grow.
- Willingness to work additional hours and take on new responsibilities as required.
- Experience in heavy industrial environments (Biomass, Chemical, Pulp & Paper, or Steel) is highly preferred.
