The Fire Coordinator is a part-time position with Lowndes County Board of Supervisors. The immediate supervisor for this position is the Director of Lowndes County Emergency Services. This person shall serve in an advisory capacity to the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors and as a liaison between the State Fire Coordinator’s Office and the State Fire Academy.

The Fire Coordinator position is an administrative one that involves planning, directing and coordinating the operational duties of the fire departments responding outside the boundaries of Columbus, Mississippi. The Fire Coordinator shall follow all guideline and policies outlined in the county personnel manual.

Duties Associated with County Fire Departments
  • Coordinate activities among the Volunteer Fire Departments
  • Coordinate all county training from the State Fire Academy
  • Attend Training meetings will all Volunteer Fire Departments
  • Assist the County in planning and implementing projects, program and policies intended to enhance county Fire Protection.
  • Supervise and evaluate personnel needs and make recommendations related to fire services.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining short- and long-range plans aimed at upgrading fire protection services and improving fire protection classes.
Administrative Duties
  • Assume responsibility for countywide compliance with record keeping and reporting requirement as established by the Commissioner of Insurance
  • Responsible for the system administration of the statewide Fire Incident Reporting System
  • Assist the County Administrator and Chief Financial Officer in preparing and administering a budget for State and County funds used for fire protection, capital improvements and expenses.
  • Maintain effective public relations with schools, civic groups and others to help in the development of local fire districts, fire prevention and other related topics.
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of an inspection program to inspect buildings in Lowndes County for the purpose of enforcing local ordinances, codes and state laws pertinent to fire protection and prevention.
  • Any other duties deemed necessary by the Emergency Services Director, County Administrator and the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors.
Knowledge
  • General office practices and procedures
  • Computerized software, including word processing and spreadsheets
  • Federal and state statues concerning employee safety
  • General functions of county government
  • Budget procedures
  • General knowledge of the fire department, its function and operation
  • NFPA codes and standards
  • Ability to learn, interpret and administer all state and local codes and ordinances relating to fire safety and prevention.

  • Communicate effective with county residents, elected officials and other employees, orally and written

  • Coordinate arson related actions with county arson investigator
  • Respond to all fires and other major incidents within in the county
Education and Special Training
  • College Degree in Public or Business Administration preferred or equivalent managerial experience in fire service
  • 10 years experience in fire service
  • Fire Department Instruction Training 1041 at the Mississippi State Fire Academy
