Overview

The Biopathology Center (BPC) at the Abigail Wexner Research Institute and the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) at Nationwide Childrens Hospital (NCH) seek a mid-career academic hematopathologist at the level of associate or full professor to join one of the largest CAP-accredited biobanking operations and pediatric pathology departments in the U.S.

The position primarily involves senior director responsibilities within the BPC, an NCH Research Institute Center of Emphasis. In addition, the position involves limited clinical service responsibilities in pediatric hematopathology.

The BPC employs approximately 200 staff members and provides a full range of services to support clinical trials and translational research related to biospecimen procurement, banking, processing, and distribution. The BPC is accredited by the College of American Pathologists Biorepository Accreditation Program (CAP BAP) and houses numerous biospecimen collection efforts including the biorepositories of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) funded Childrens Oncology Group, NRG Oncology-Columbus (formerly the Gynecologic Oncology Group Tissue Bank), and SWOG.

The BPC is also home to the NCI-funded Pediatric Division of the Cooperative Human Tissue Network and the Biospecimen Core Resource of the Office of Cancer Genomics, as well as numerous biospecimen collections sponsored by funded NCH investigators. Today, more than 6 million biospecimens are stored by the BPC using various storage modalities, including liquid nitrogen and
-80C mechanical freezers. In 2024, approximately 70,000 biospecimens were distributed to investigators. In addition to storage/banking services, the BPC offers other services including histology, digital pathology, and molecular genetic specimen processing services.

The successful candidate will actively participate in laboratory management including quality assurance processes and contribute to clinical trial and translational protocol development by providing expertise on the procurement, processing, banking and distribution of biospecimens.

The Abigail Wexner Research Institute at NCH is ranked in the top 10 nationally in NIH funding to free-standing children's hospitals. NCH has been consistently ranked in the top 10 childrens hospitals on U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Children's Hospitals Honor Roll."
