Overview

The Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Blood and Marrow Transplantation in the Department of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University located at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio is seeking a pediatric hematologist, who is Board Certified in Pediatrics and Board Certified/Eligible in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology to join our Classical Hematology Program. Interest in hemostasis/thrombosis and hemoglobinopathies is preferred.

The Pediatric Hematology Program at Nationwide Children's Hospital serves children and young adults with a full array of classical hematology conditions. We offer family centered, integrated, multi-disciplinary, care that is infused with basic, translational and clinical research opportunities.

Our hemostasis team cares for more than 1000 patients with bleeding disorders and is a federally funded Hemophilia Treatment Center, in partnership with the American Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network. Our young women’s hematology program was the first of its kind and provides female centric care for those with heavy menstrual bleeding. We offer research trials in new drug development across the hemostasis spectrum including gene editing.

Additionally, we are an International Hemophilia Training Center for the World Federation of Hemophilia and offer a 340b pharmacy program.

The anticoagulation program oversees inpatient and outpatient care for all patients with thrombosis/anticoagulation needs across all service lines in the hospital system. On average there are approximately 550 patients being cared for at any one time. We work closely with cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery interventional radiology, ECMO, physical neurology, medication and rehabilitation, the neonatal intensive care unit, and solid organ transplantation. We also offer dedicated multi-disciplinary stroke and post-thrombotic syndrome clinics.

The sickle cell program cares for approximately 500 patients with hemoglobinopathies. The newborn screening program has additional dedicated social work and genetic counseling services. Specialty clinics include adolescent, pain, hydroxyurea, and pulmonary clinics as well as a novel school-based healthcare options. We offer genetic therapies and bone marrow transplant options for those with sickle cell disease and thalassemia.

Our cytopenia program provides multidisciplinary care for approximately 550 patients with an array of cytopenia and immuno-hematology concerns. We are a member of the NICER consortium and NAAPAC. We have a dedicated multidisciplinary hemato-immunology and lymphoproliferative clinic. We collaborate closely with bone and transplant, immunology, rheumatology and clinical pathology teams.

We have additional multidisciplinary vascular malformations, maternal fetal medicine, and iron deficiency programs as well as an integrated clinical research organization.

The team currently includes 9 classical hematologists (Drs Susan Creary, Amy Dunn, Bryce Kerlin, Amanda Jacobson-Kelly, Sarah O’Brien, Vilmarie Rodriguez, Melissa Rose, Amanda Sankar, and Anthony Villella). Along with 7 advanced practice providers, 8 nurse clinician/navigators, 4 social workers, 2 genetic counselors 3 care coordinators, and 2 psychologists. We offer a one-year pediatric hemostasis/thrombosis fellowship.

Applicants should have strong clinical skills and a commitment to education. The faculty appointment will be in The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Responsibilities
  • Conducts patient assessments and diagnoses medical conditions.
  • Develops and implements treatment plans for patients in accordance with established protocols. Monitors patient progress and adjusts treatment plans as necessary.
