Director of the Newark Earthworks Center
The Ohio State University at Newark invites applications for the position of Director of the Newark Earthworks Center at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor with tenure. The role combines leadership of the Center, rigorous scholarship employing Native American and Indigenous Studies methodologies, and dedicated teaching and service. Scholars from disciplines such as Anthropology, English, Geography, History, History of Art, and related fields are encouraged to apply.
Position OverviewThe Newark Earthworks Center is an academic research center dedicated to the ancestral and contemporary Indigenous places, peoples, cultures, and experiences within and around Ohio. The Director will lead the Center’s mission, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, secure external funding, and serve as a primary teacher and scholar.
Responsibilities and Performance Objectives- Lead the Newark Earthworks Center, building its profile on campus and beyond.
- Expand meaningful research and outreach opportunities for students.
- Develop impactful, productive scholarship aligned with the Center’s mission.
- Cultivate productive relationships with tribal governments and Indigenous communities.
- Collaborate with scholars across departments and engage diverse constituencies.
- Teach and advise graduate and undergraduate students.
- Seek out external funding that emphasizes the strengths of the Center’s research and outreach efforts.
Required
- PhD in Indigenous Studies, American Indian Studies, or an allied field with a research specialization in Indigenous or American Indian Studies.
- Prior academic experience at a research-intensive university.
- Demonstrated track record of academic leadership, management, and collaboration.
- Record of teaching excellence.
Desired
- Ability to facilitate, articulate, execute, and/or steward a strategic vision.
- Familiarity working with campus administrators and leaders.
- Experience working with external stakeholders to establish and maintain collaborations.
- Experience collaborating with alumni, campus leadership, and external stakeholders to expand financial resources.
