Position Summary

The Long-Term Substitute Teacher serves as the classroom instructor during the extended absence (such as maternity leave or medical leave) of a regular, licensed teacher. The individual in this role ensures continuity of instruction, maintains an effective learning environment, and supports student academic and social-emotional growth in alignment with district goals and curriculum standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide instruction consistent with the plans, curriculum, and expectations of the regular classroom teacher.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans when long-term coverage extends beyond available teacher plans.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student progress as required.
  • Manage classroom behavior in accordance with school policies and the RAMWay behavioral expectations.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, and staff regarding assignments, expectations, and progress.
  • Collaborate with grade-level or department teams as needed to ensure consistency and continuity of learning.
  • Participate in required staff meetings, professional development, and other assigned duties during the assignment period.
  • Utilize available instructional resources, technology, and materials effectively to engage students.
  • Ensure a safe and respectful learning environment that promotes inclusion, equity, and positive relationships.
  • Adhere to all district policies, procedures, and professional standards.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Licensure: Valid Substitute Teaching License issued by the Ohio Department of Education.
  • Employment Approval: Must be approved through the Educational Service Center (ESC) of Central Ohio. See ESCCO application process here.
  • Experience: Prior teaching or substitute teaching experience preferred.
  • Skills and Attributes:
    • Strong communication and organizational skills.
    • Ability to follow established instructional and behavioral routines.
    • Flexibility and adaptability to various teaching environments and grade levels.
    • Commitment to maintaining a positive, student-centered classroom culture.
Terms of Employment
  • Length of assignment varies depending on the duration of the teacher’s approved leave.
  • Compensation will follow the substitute pay rate established through the ESC of Central Ohio.
  • Position does not include full district benefits unless specified through the ESC agreement.
Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated by the Building Principal and/or ESC Supervisor in accordance with district and ESC guidelines for substitute employees.
