Position: Volunteer, Ohio History Center & Ohio Village
Type: Volunteer
Schedule: Part-time, unpaid 3+ hour shifts. Saturday work may be required for programming.
Location: Ohio History Center, Columbus, OH
Reports to: Volunteer Coordinator
Summary: Volunteers at the Ohio History Center provide a welcoming environment for all our guests. Interpretive volunteers help lead a variety of educational programs for adults, families, and school children, both online via Zoom and on site at the Ohio History Center and Ohio Village. Duties include leading museum education program elements, way finding, school programming, museum operations, and costumed interpretation for special programs.
EssentialFunctions
- Greet and welcome visitors
- Deliver educational programs for audiences of diverse backgrounds (school-age children, young adults, educators, seniors, visitors with special needs, and those for whom English is not their first language)
- Ensure program materials are properly handled and maintained
- Assist with the set-up and take-down of program materials
- Deliver educational programs for diverse audiences
- Use Zoom to participate in online educational programs
- Remain aware of and informed about changes on site or in the museum
- Represent the site professionally and courteously to members of the visiting public
- Interact with program participants and visitors in a positive and engaging manner
- Must be at least 15 years of age
- Must complete a background check
- Must create a volunteer account, log volunteer hours, and sign up for shifts via Track It Forward
- Attend volunteer trainings and meetings as needed
- Must use their own computer and be willing to learn Zoom if needed
- Comfortable speaking in front of groups
- Desire to learn about history and share knowledge
- Reliable and punctual
- Flexible, enthusiastic, and respectful of working with diverse staff and visitors
- Physically able to lead tours around the museum
- Learn about the history of Ohio
- Learn to work within a team environment
- Learn about aspects of visitor/hospitality services through training and on-the-job experience
- Gain an understanding of the inner workings of a non‑profit museum
