CTL Engineering, Inc. is hiring a Principal to lead and manage our Environmental Team. Our award‑winning consulting engineering firm, with 15 locations across OH, IN, WV, KY, NC, SC, and VA, has a rich 98‑year history delivering civil, environmental, geotechnical, construction administration, accident reconstruction, roofing, A/V system design, transportation design, and specialized testing services.
Highlights- Directly reports to the COO; manages a team of 14 employees with planned growth.
- Projects primarily in Ohio and northern Kentucky, with anticipated expansion into Indiana, West Virginia, South Carolina, and Virginia.
- Travel within these regions is expected.
- Willingness and ability to manage personnel and services across multiple offices and states.
- Set overarching goals for the Infrastructure Service Line (Environmental) and all team members to support strategic initiatives.
- Partner with other departments to anticipate future needs, develop action plans, and share successful impacts to increase company value.
- Provide leadership, vision, goals, and accountability for team performance.
- Lead training, development, and supervision of Technicians, Project Managers, and Engineers in the Environmental division.
- Refine, update, and lead the various processes the Team follows on projects, including scheduling, due diligence, evaluation, quality assurance, and asset management.
- Conduct project management and staff oversight for Environmental, AML, or Water/Wastewater projects.
- Participate in business development and contract negotiations.
- Define scope of work, prepare proposals, and manage projects.
- Coordinate client contact, develop and retain professional relationships, identify prospects, qualify them, make recommendations, and make final go/no‑go decisions.
- Manage budgeting and project profitability: review budgets and schedules, identify concerns, prepare supplemental requests, monitor performance, and prepare annual budgets.
- Review operational KPIs and report revenue vs. budget monthly to the C‑Suite.
- Hire and retain professional Engineers, Technicians, and office professionals with COO/CEO approval.
- Work closely with the Chief Growth Officer, Dean Hatfield, and other regional principals to develop annual projections, budget, and resource sharing for project profitability.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of Civil/Environmental Engineering principles.
- Technical experience in consulting and/or regulatory environments for ecological, remediation design, permit, and grant writing projects.
- Experience with standard testing and observation methods.
- Ability to read project plans and construction documents.
- Understanding of construction or engineering services.
- Experience performing quality control initiatives and performance testing.
- Previous lab reporting, report writing, and record maintenance experience.
- Current oversight and management of lab reporting and documentation.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to provide status updates independently.
- Quality‑minded and client‑focused.
- 20+ years of experience with environmental‑related projects.
- Bachelor’s degree (preferred Master’s or PhD) in Environmental Engineering or related sciences such as geology, biology, or natural resource management.
- Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Professional (CP), Certified Professional Geologist (CPG), or Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) certification(s) preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of environmental specifications and prior field experience/project management on a broad array of environmental projects.
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
