Facilities Engineer

Full time, permanent.

Location:

Ohio History Center, Columbus, OH. Compensation: $30‑32 per hour. Benefits:

Summary

Reporting to the Department Manager of Buildings and Grounds and under the direction of the Chief Engineer, the Facilities Engineer operates, inspects, and performs preventative maintenance on major HVAC, electrical, and plumbing equipment. They repair malfunctions as needed, conduct routine maintenance on all power house and major HVAC equipment, monitor equipment from the control center, respond to building emergencies, and assist with work on boilers, chillers, cooling towers, air handlers, and rooftop units.

Functions
  • Responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems at the Ohio History Center, the Ohio Village, Collections Storage facility, and statewide sites as assigned.
  • Consult on planning and engineering of mechanical systems and preventive maintenance programs for the statewide system of sites and museums, advising staff on major MEP capital needs.
  • Monitor energy use and actively pursue improvements in energy efficiency of mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Education, Skills, Experience
  • Associate's degree in engineering or equivalent, plus five to eight years of experience in maintenance and management of mechanical and electrical systems for a comparable facility.
  • Valid Ohio driver's license.
Desired Skills & Experience
  • CEM/CFM/FMP certifications and/or Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings.
Required Competencies
  • Ability to operate a powered industrial truck, preferably a cherry picker and stand‑up forklifts.
  • Ability to read blueprints, repair manuals, and parts catalogs.
  • Close attention to detail and safety.
  • Self‑motivated with communication, organizational, problem‑solving, and time management skills.
  • Ability to utilize Microsoft software programs (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel) and learn environmental management systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diversity of individuals at all organizational levels.
  • Thorough understanding and application of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and electrical engineering; operation and maintenance of heat and power generating equipment; pneumatic, electric and digital controls.
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE standards.
  • Experience with Energy Star Portfolio Manager or similar energy‑tracking software.
Work Environment
  • Will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Frequently exposed to noisy conditions.
  • Frequently exposed to dusty conditions.
  • Occasional work outdoors in varying weather conditions including extreme cold and heat.
  • Ability to travel in Ohio.
