Job Description
Performs difficult professional work related to design, construction, inspection, and maintenance of land development projects; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision. May supervise subordinate technical and/or clerical personnel.
This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, standing, and walking; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities;
the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
- Reviews development plans, plats, and construction cost estimates; inspect and monitor construction projects; review engineering designs, plans, cost estimates, plats, and legal documents; prepare and maintain records and files.
- Prepares plans and specifications for County construction projects.
- Develop requests for proposals for engineering and construction services.
- Coordinates work of consulting engineers and/or construction contractors.
- Serves as project engineer on construction projects.
- Attends meetings to present and support projects.
- Prepares and maintain technical files for related projects.
- Responds to inquiries from the public.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of modern principles and practices of civil engineering; general knowledge of design, construction, maintenance, and cost estimating relating to stormwater management, low impact development, integrated management practices, erosion/sediment control planning, and floodplain management; ability to prepare technical reports pertaining to engineering projects; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, official consultants, and the general public.
Registration as a Professional Engineer or Engineer in Training is preferred.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in civil engineering, water resources engineering, or other field of engineering and considerable experience in construction or engineering design.
Education and ExperienceA driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia (copy of current DMV record, dated within 30 days, must be provided before the employment start date).
Candidate selected will be required to successfully complete a criminal history and fingerprint check and will be required to satisfactorily complete a post-offer, pre-employment medical exam at the County’s expense unless this requirement has been completed for current County position.
