Electrical Controls Engineer – Allied Mineral Products
Location:
Columbus, Ohio
Allied Mineral Products is a leading manufacturer of monolithic refractories worldwide. The Electrical Controls Engineer will support the organization in developing and implementing manufacturing information and automation strategy, defining projects and solutions applying technology, and leveraging expertise in manufacturing process control and information systems.
Key Duties- Identify and integrate hardware/sensors, software, and data acquisition tools to develop and manage IoT/Industry 4.0 applications for data analysis, preventive/predictive maintenance, quality and condition monitoring and performance improvements.
- Ensure data integrity for analysis and visualization solutions using software and programming languages such as SQL, Lab View, Ignition, and Microsoft Power BI.
- Extract and analyze data from multiple platforms and sources to develop and implement analytics reports and visualization toolsets. (Dashboards, OEE, etc.)
- Familiarity with and ability to use, program, and debug PLC, HMI, and robot software.
- Design and deploy manufacturing/operations equipment controls and data acquisition infrastructure in alignment with company’s network infrastructure standards.
- Lead equipment network asset management including the creation and maintenance of component inventory and documentation such as technical specifications information, network configuration, network mapping, processes, and change management.
- Develop, implement, and interpret process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) into schematics, PLC controls, and data acquisition plans.
- Coordinate activities between R&D, Operations and IT.
- Function as the subject matter expert in both hardware and software for engineering systems for industrial manufacturing environment, managing plant engineering projects from beginning to end, including defining requirements, developing designs, cost estimates, and timelines, obtaining buy‑in from other parties, planning and supervising installations, tracking revisions, and producing final documentation.
- Responsible for the electrical controls aspects of the projects including hardware design, software design, design documentation, networking, data acquisition, equipment installation, equipment debug, and support.
- Evaluate new and used equipment, designing electrical controls for equipment for plant and lab systems.
- Develop and implement control system designs, including gathering requirements, performing calculations, PLC & HMI programming, system validation, and implementation.
- Produce accurate mechanical and electrical drawings for layout, assembly, fabrication, and erection of equipment and facilities.
- Prepare specifications for bidding and purchasing of equipment, materials, supplies, and services.
- Coordinate outside contractors, as needed, to complete any assigned projects.
- Provide training and instruction to Maintenance and other Allied employees on updated system configurations, new equipment and applications, safety, and other topics.
- Provide timely support to troubleshoot hardware and software, identify issues with facilities and lab equipment, and implement solutions to prevent recurrence and improve equipment uptime.
- Maintain excellent lines of communication with Maintenance, Production, other Allied departments, and our affiliates.
- Support Allied’s manufacturing operations around the world. Occasional travel to US or international locations may be required.
- Independently maintain technical knowledge and remain current on emerging technologies.
- A Bachelors’ degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, IT, Physics or other similar technical field, or equivalent work experience required.
- At least 5 years of related work experience and prior work experience in a manufacturing environment a plus.
- Knowledge of industrial electrical controls, PLC programming, and power distribution systems.
- In‑depth understanding of applicable North America electrical codes and industry standards used in equipment design including but not limited to UL, NFPA, NEC, and IEC.
