Senior Project Engineer at Allied Mineral Products

Allied Mineral Products is a leading manufacturer of monolithic refractories worldwide. This role is located in Columbus, Ohio and reports to the Manager, Global Projects within Plant Engineering. The Senior Project Engineer plays a critical role in delivering capital projects that improve manufacturing operations and facility infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
  • Define project specifications and scope of work (SOW).
  • Manage requests for quotation (RFQs) for procurement of equipment and services.
  • Deliver on project key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Oversee installation, punch list completion, and commissioning of new or upgraded systems.
  • Coordinate and manage subcontractors to ensure safety, quality, and on-time delivery.
  • Travel up to four times annually for equipment installations or site evaluations and participate in up to four affiliate meetings per month.
Strategic & Continuous Improvement
  • Identify opportunities to advance manufacturing operations tools and technology using continuous improvement and problem‑solving methodologies.
  • Conduct process reviews, perform root cause analyses, and develop improvement plans implementing lean manufacturing principles.
  • Design improvement solutions for equipment and systems to manufacture and handle all materials produced by Allied Mineral Products.
Project Management & Engineering Execution
  • Manage all types of plant engineering projects from beginning to end, including defining requirements, developing designs, obtaining internal buy‑in, planning and supervising installations, tracking revisions, and producing final documentation.
  • Prepare specifications for and coordinate bidding and purchasing of equipment, materials, supplies, and services.
  • Produce accurate mechanical and/or P& drawings for layout, assembly, fabrication, and erection of equipment and facilities.
  • Coordinate outside contractors to complete assigned projects.
  • Identify and recommend preventive maintenance procedures and spare parts requirements for new equipment.
Technical Support & Troubleshooting
  • Provide engineering support on major breakdowns, equipment rebuilds, and recurring maintenance problem areas.
  • Troubleshoot and identify issues with facility equipment; perform simple repairs when necessary.
  • Provide training and instruction to Maintenance and other Allied employees on new equipment, safety, and other relevant topics.
Collaboration & Communication
  • Maintain excellent lines of communication with Maintenance, Production, other Allied departments, and affiliates.
  • Participate in affiliate meetings across time zones (estimated four per month).
Global Support & Travel
  • Support Allied’s manufacturing operations around the world.
  • Travel to project sites for equipment installation and site checks (up to four times annually).
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field, or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 7 years of related work experience with prior project management experience managing equipment/facilities budgets ≥ $1M preferred.
  • Strong experience in industrial equipment including OSHA requirements, dust collection, material handling, and related best practices.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and electrical design principles.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills and a practical approach to problem solving.
  • Proficiency with CAD and related computer applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, and human relations skills.
  • Ability to work independently and willingness to work flexible hours as needed.
  • Additional useful skills: knowledge of new plant construction, industrial electrical controls and PLC programming, prior HVAC and facilities equipment experience, or experience with burner or combustion systems.
Working Environment
  • Office work environment with frequent exposure to Allied’s manufacturing facilities, which may include dusty, hot, or cold conditions.
  • Must follow Allied Mineral Products’ Safety & Health policy and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as appropriate.
