Traveling Construction Materials Technician II
Join our Traveling Construction Materials Technician team and advance your career by working on high‑profile projects such as transportation, commercial buildings, wind farms, and more throughout the Eastern Midwest (Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia). This is a full‑time, travel‑heavy role (100 % on‑site) that offers professional development and the opportunity to work on a variety of construction materials projects.
General Responsibilities- Perform field testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials (soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, steel).
- Communicate with project managers, engineers, client representatives, and contractors regarding site conditions, project requirements, and test results.
- Transport material samples and documentation to the laboratory for further testing and analysis.
- Tabulate results and submit written and digital reports for daily transmittal to the Terracon Project Manager.
- Maintain and clean equipment, vehicles, and work areas.
- Assist with scheduling and dispatch of technicians to project sites.
- Adhere to strict safety standards and perform pre‑task planning.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform testing, observation, and inspection as directed by training and procedures.
- Provide clear documentation of findings and results.
- Verify data accuracy before communication and submittal to the Project Manager.
- Communicate information to the Project Manager and other personnel as directed.
- Assist higher‑level technicians on complex tasks.
- Maintain assigned equipment and calibration.
- Drive a vehicle such as a Ford F‑150 or equivalent.
- Follow all safety rules, practices, and requirements for each project.
- Maintain quality standards on all projects.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 2 years of materials testing experience.
- Proficiency with a laptop computer and Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
- ACI certification in one or more of the following areas:
- Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I
- Concrete Strength Testing Technician
- Certified in radiation safety and Nuclear Density Gauge operation.
- Successful completion of related internal safety certifications.
- Certifications in one or more of the following categories:
- NICET Level II in Construction Materials Testing (categories: Asphalt, Concrete, Soils).
- NICET Level II in Geotechnical (categories: Construction, Laboratory, Exploration, Generalist).
- ICC certification in Reinforced Concrete, Spray‑applied Fireproofing, Structural Masonry, Prestressed/Post‑Tensioned Concrete, Structural Steel – Bolting, Structural Steel – Welding.
- American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Associate Welding Inspector (CAWI).
- American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II in Visual Testing, Magnetic Particle Testing, Dye Penetrant Testing, Radiographic Testing, or Ultrasonic Testing.
- Other national, regional, state, or local materials‑related certifications deemed appropriate by the Terracon Department Manager.
The national standard salary range for this position is $19.50–$27.50 per hour. The base range may be adjusted based on the applicant’s location. Final compensation will be based on qualifications and experience.
