Speech Pathologist, Occupational Therapy
Overview
Rehabilitation team members are licensed or certified professionals (physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, social workers or therapeutic recreation specialists) who work within a team to offer inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation services. Services are offered to the acute-care hospital, the acute inpatient rehabilitation facility (Dodd Hall), or outpatient service sites to patients with disorders and conditions such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, or other neurogenic disorders, orthopedic problems, burns, amputations, or chronic pain.
Rehabilitation team members report to the rehabilitation team leaders as part of the overall Rehabilitation Services Division structure.
Each team member is part of a group effort to provide care within a continuous performance improvement environment, while maintaining distinct professional contributions to the team approach. Team members assess patients and establish plans of care; provide a wide variety of treatment techniques; educate and support families; and facilitate continuing care planning. They evaluate quality of services and participate in outcomes management activities.
Although team members report to a team leader, they are also responsible to each other, to those they supervise (rehab assistants and aides) and to other participants in patient care activities to ensure coordination of services and programs. A team member embraces the Intensive Caring values of the organization to guide interactions with others.
The Speech Language Pathologist will provide specialized treatments to help patients explore and identify productive avocational interests, including assessment of interests, exploration of resources post-discharge, exposure to local organizations, and education material to maximize post-discharge planning. The PT is expected to be the community link and liaison for patients, staff, and consumers of Rehabilitation Services.
