Business Intelligence, Data Analyst
We are seeking an experienced Power BI Developer to design, develop, test, deploy, and support enterprise business intelligence solutions. This role requires strong expertise in Power BI, SQL, DAX, semantic modeling, dimensional data modeling, data visualization, security, administration, and embedded analytics.
The ideal candidate understands the full reporting lifecycle, from underlying data structures through semantic models and ultimately the user experience. They can work with transactional, Operational Data Store (ODS), and dimensional Data Mart environments and understand how data architecture, relationships, cardinality, DAX, security, and visualization design affect the accuracy and usability of a Power BI solution.
This individual will work collaboratively with business stakeholders, data professionals, application developers, and other Power BI developers while taking ownership of the quality and testing of their work.
Key Responsibilities Power BI Development & Semantic Modeling- Design, develop, and maintain Power BI semantic models, reports, and dashboards.
- Build semantic models against transactional databases, Operational Data Stores (ODS), data warehouses, and Data Marts.
- Understand dimensional modeling concepts including facts, dimensions, grain, keys, star schemas, and relationships.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of cardinality, relationship direction and filter propagation.
- Determine when source data structures should be simplified or reshaped to create effective analytical models.
- Design semantic models for accuracy, usability, maintainability, and performance.
- Able to write advanced SQL for analysis, validation, reconciliation, and troubleshooting.
- Can demonstrate proficiency with joins, CTEs, subqueries, aggregations, data types, NULL handling, and query performance.
- Develop maintainable DAX measures for KPIs, ratios, trends, time-based analysis, and complex business calculations.
- Understand DAX concepts including row context, filter context, context transition, CALCULATE, iterators, time intelligence, and relationship behavior.
- Troubleshoot results across the full data path, including source data, SQL, semantic model relationships, filters, and DAX calculations.
- Apply established data visualization and information-design principles to reports and dashboards.
- Be familiar with recognized visualization thought leaders and approaches, including Edward Tufte, Stephen Few, and Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic.
- Make effective use of visual selection, layout, color, hierarchy, labeling, and information density to communicate information clearly.
- Design intuitive report experiences using appropriate navigation, filtering, drill-through, tooltips, bookmarks, and other Power BI capabilities.
- Translate business requirements into clear and actionable visualizations while maintaining consistency, accessibility, and ease of use.
- Embed Power BI reports and dashboards into web applications, including iframe-based implementations.
- Collaborate with application developers to integrate Power BI content into a cohesive web application experience.
- Understand authentication, authorization, Power BI permissions, and semantic model security as they relate to embedded reporting.
- Design reports with the embedded experience in mind, including navigation, sizing, filtering, and usability.
- Troubleshoot embedded report issues involving authentication, permissions, rendering, filtering, and user access.
- Design and implement Row-Level Security (RLS), including appropriate static and dynamic security patterns.
- Test security using different roles and user scenarios to ensure users can access only authorized information.
- Understand Power BI Service capabilities including work spaces, apps, semantic models, refresh, gateways, permissions, workspace roles, and deployment processes.
- Troubleshoot refresh, gateway, access, and Power BI Service issues.
- Follow established governance, naming, documentation, deployment, and change-management practices.
- Take ownership of developer-level testing before solutions are delivered for user acceptance testing or production deployment.
- Validate Power BI results against authoritative source data using SQL and appropriate reconciliation techniques.
- Test DAX calculations, aggregations, relationships, cardinality, filters, slicers, interactions, drill-through, navigation, refresh…
