- Provides interpretation and translation services to facilitate communications between various individuals; communicates with staff, administrators, teachers, students, parents, and others in English and a designated second language;
- Provides language support, over the phone, to Columbus City Schools personnel District-wide and non-English speaking parents/guardians of Columbus City Schools students;
- Assists school administrators with developing and translating forms, bulletins, and notices to parents and the community;
- Reads and rewrites materials in a specified language following established rules pertaining to factors such as word meanings, sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation;
- Translates District-wide materials such as letters to parents, documents, policies and procedures, brochures, invitations, and event schedules;
- Interprets, translates, and records District robocall messages;
- Maintains call logs, records, and files related to interpretation and translation requests;
- Handles confidential information such as medical records and disability information;
- May serve as an interpreter for meetings, hearings, assemblies, conferences, presentations, or other events.
- High School Diploma or GED
- Three (3) years of experience translating and interpreting materials and communications between English and a designated second language.
- Substitution(s): A certificate of high school equivalence (GED) will be accepted in lieu of the twelfth school grade requirement.
The examination process is administered by the ESL Department. The department will notify candidates invited to take the exam.
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesThorough knowledge of American Sign Language; thorough knowledge of Pidgin Signed English; thorough knowledge of Signed English; considerable knowledge of deaf culture; general knowledge of English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; skill in expressive, receptive, and reverse interpreting; skill in reflecting the register (level) of the consumers being served; ability to interpret in a variety of settings and situations; ability to interpret at various sign levels based on the communication level of the deaf or hard-of-hearing person;
ability to discern specific student language abilities; ability to deal effectively and advocate with school officials, teachers, parents, working associates, and the general public, both hearing and deaf or hard-of-hearing; ability to utilize the language most readily understood by the consumers who are being served; ability to convey messages with the thought and spirit intended by the sender.
Considerable knowledge of vocabulary and correct usage, grammar, syntax, semantics, spelling, and punctuation of English and a designated secondary language; considerable knowledge of different dialects, regionalisms, idiomatic expressions, and cultural sensitivity related to designated secondary language; some knowledge of modern office practices; ability to express thought and meaning between languages which is structurally, grammatically, and idiomatically correct; ability to comprehend and translate vernacular language expressions of varying disciplines;
ability to interpret nuances from one language to another without altering original meaning and intent; ability to speak clearly and concisely in English and a designated secondary language; ability to listen and understand the English language and secondary language;…
