Job Summary
A formal invitation to the Law Enforcement Testing will be sent to qualifying applicants by e‑mail once the application has been received in the Professional Standards Office.
Responsibilities- Enforcing laws;
- Investigating criminal activity;
- Serving civil papers;
- Ensuring the safety of the public;
- Testifying in court;
- Maintaining records and files;
- Preparing reports;
- Makes arrests, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints;
- Subdues resisting suspects using weapons, maneuvers, and other approved self‑defense methods;
- Enforces traffic laws; issues citations for traffic violations;
- Fills out arrest records; takes fingerprints and photographs; performs prisoner security functions; investigates traffic accidents;
- Interviews victims and witnesses; secures property and evidence;
- Prepares detailed reports on activities and assignments;
- Serves civil process and criminal arrest warrants;
- Performs related tasks as required.
- Written test – everyone submitting an application will be required to participate in a written examination. The test will be graded on site and the candidate will be advised of his/her score. A score of seventy‑percent (70%) or above is required to advance in the process. The Sheriff may waive this portion of the selection process in the event of prior police experience or other factors as determined by the Sheriff.
- Polygraph, physical agility tests, psychological evaluation, and background investigation.
- Candidate selected will be required to complete a seven‑step hiring process including written, oral, and medical examinations; polygraph and physical agility tests; psychological evaluation; and background investigation.
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- Possession of valid Virginia driver’s license;
- Knowledge of police methods, practices, and procedures;
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear, comprehensive reports;
- Ability to deal courteously, firmly, and tactfully with the public;
- Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances;
- Possession of physical agility and endurance;
- Skill in the use of firearms and the operation of a motor vehicle;
- Must also be 21 years of age and a U.S. citizen;
- Preference will be given to applicants with DCJS Law Enforcement Basic Certification, related work experience, good knowledge of Stafford County’s geography, and advanced training or college course work in law enforcement.
