What You’ll Do
The Ohio Attorney General’s Office is seeking an experienced Forensic Science Laboratory Technician 2 to serve in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) NIBIN Section at the Bowling Green, Ohio office. The role reports daily to the Bowling Green location and supports the state’s official crime lab in providing expert investigative services to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
Responsibilities- Operate the NIBIN Brass Trax/Matchpoint system for entering and managing evidence.
- Receive and manage evidence for entry into the NIBIN system and make firearms safe for laboratory staff to handle or examine.
- Perform cursory examination of cartridge case evidence to determine the best evidence for NIBIN entry.
- Maintain all records related to NIBIN, including casework documentation, data for confirmed hits and acquisitions, and monthly statistics reported to the ATF.
- Issue NIBIN notifications and reports to law enforcement agencies regarding entries or results of searches, following ATF Minimum Required Operating Standards (MROS).
- Maintain proficiency with NIBIN instrumentation and database evidence entry and correlations.
- Testify in court on cases related to the examination of evidence.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Undergraduate core program in criminal justice, physical or biological sciences (e.g., forensics, biology, chemistry, physics) with coursework that required scientific laboratory testing and meets the academic requirements of the laboratory’s accrediting body.
- Or two (2) years of laboratory work experience in firearms, NIBIN database entry and correlation review.
- Or equivalent minimum class qualifications for employment noted above, including experience with NIBIN database entry, correlation review, and evidence handling and/or OPOTA Certification.
Unusual working conditions include exposure to caustic chemicals, explosives, odors, firearms, drugs, decomposing tissue, physiological fluids, and contagious diseases. Overnight travel may be required.
