Position: NAGPRA Osteology Volunteer

SummaryThis volunteer work is for those with an existing, demonstrated knowledge, looking to gain practical experience with human osteology. Volunteers will work to identify human remains to determine MNI (and age and sex as possible/needed). The remains come from various archaeological sites around Ohio, meaning that they are most often the ancestors of American Indians. Certain practices are followed to respect cultural sensitivities at the request of our tribal partners.
All work is done with the intent to repatriate. Volunteers will learn about this process and the law (NAGPRA), as well as gain experience with osteology. Some work with material culture may be necessary but training will be provided.
Note:
depending on experience level, you may be required to volunteer in the OSU lab prior to coming to Ohio History Connection.
- Observe any cultural sensitivities at the request of our tribal partners
- Determine minimum number of individuals (MNI) of ancestral remains.
- Work with NAGPRA staff to rehouse them respectfully
- Digitize corresponding catalogs
- Rehouse objects to bring up to museum standards as necessary
- Keep a journal of activities, skills learned
- Keep track of and report hours worked on a regular basis
- Must have experience working with human osteology
- Works well both independently and with and in support of colleagues to complete work.
- Accepts challenge of broadening historical, social, and cultural knowledge of American Indian experiences throughout Ohio and the United States.
- Demonstrates a potential to communicate well in written and verbal communications, including informal mediums like email and meetings and formal publications and presentations.
- Must complete a background check and volunteer onboarding paperwork
- Must create and log volunteer hours and sign up for volunteer shifts via Track It Forward
- Knowledge of museum best practices and procedures.
- Experience in respectful osteological work toward repatriation.
