Responsibilities

The Licensed Practical Nurse provides skilled nursing services to patients under the direction of a physician or midlevel provider, including nursing procedures and execution of patient care plans such as sterile dressings, soaks, compresses, enemas, suppositories, oxygen therapy, catheterization, diabetic care, and pre‑ and post‑operative care.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Adheres to LPN established scope of practice; observes clinical protocols, policies, and standards; provides basic patient care and treatments including dressings, enemas, alcohol rubs, and catheterizations.
  • Rooms patient, measures, and records vital signs (height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration) and collects data related to patient visits.
  • Prepares patients for examinations, tests and treatments and explains procedures.
  • Observes patients and reports changes in condition, adverse reactions, and takes necessary action.
  • Administers prescribed medications, starts intravenous fluids, and records times and amounts on charts.
  • Assists with the use of medical equipment such as catheters, tracheotomy tubes, and oxygen supplies.
  • Collects samples (blood, urine, sputum) and performs routine laboratory tests.
  • Sterilizes equipment and supplies using germicides, sterilizers, or autoclaves.
  • Assists physicians, midlevel providers, and office staff with scheduling appointments, keeping records, and performing other clerical duties.
  • Sets up equipment and prepares treatment rooms for patients.
  • Maintains and stocks inventory of supplies and instruments.
  • Educates patients regarding health‑related issues within scope of practice.
  • Coordinates labeling, delivery, and receipt of laboratory specimens and results.
  • Practices safety, environmental, and infection control methods.
  • Communicates any safety issues for clinical equipment and follows up to ensure completion.
  • May assist provider with real‑time documentation of each patient’s chart during appointments.
  • Uses job‑related software and systems.
  • Travel may be required to accommodate staffing levels at other clinical facilities.
