Job Title:

Researcher Department:

Medicine | IM Medical Oncology

The Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology (PIIO) at OSUCCC – James

Senior Scientist – Mass Spectrometry Proteomics

The Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology (PIIO) at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC) is seeking an experienced Senior Scientist to direct an advanced mass spectrometry-based proteomics core facility. The Senior Scientist will design and perform a wide variety of highly specialized mass spectrometry assays to support immuno-oncology and cancer biology research initiatives, collaborating closely with a multidisciplinary team of computational biologists, chemists, and clinicians.

This individual will be responsible for the development, optimization, testing, and implementation of a wide variety of proteomics sample preparation and data acquisition protocols involving biochemistry, chemistry, and analytical mass spectrometry. Bioinformatics is key to interpreting proteomics datasets, and the individual must be able to analyze and explain proteomics data investigating the molecular mechanisms underpinning cancer immunology and therapy resistance.

The Senior Scientist must be able to perform high-level work independently with limited oversight. Duties and responsibilities are expected to change over time, requiring flexibility and creativity. The individual will work within the broader research ecosystem of the PIIO, and the Department of Biomedical Informatics (BMI), contributing to high-impact research and publications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead independent research projects as well as contribute to team-based scientific inquiries. Design and conduct data intendent acquisition (DIA), data dependent acquisition (DDA), and parallel reaction monitoring (PRM) proteomics experiments to fit the specific experimental needs of stakeholder cancer researchers. Manage a wide variety of simultaneous projects with multiple stakeholders. Integrate proteomics data with genomics and other omics datasets to derive insights into cancer immunology and tumor microenvironment biology.

Clearly communicate the results of proteomics data to stakeholders with multiple levels of experience.
  • Perform basic HPLC and mass spectrometry operation, maintenance, and calibration using a Thermo Exploris Orbitrap Mass Spectrometer and Easy NanoLC. Develop and refine protocols for sample preparation, mass spectrometry analysis, and data processing.
  • Collaborate on multi-author research papers, contributing to study design, data analysis, and manuscript writing. Provide training and mentorship to junior staff and postdoctoral researchers. Work collaboratively with researchers from BMI, PIIO, and the OSUCCC – James, contributing to cross-disciplinary projects and proteomics expertise.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • PhD in biochemistry, analytical chemistry, bioinformatics, or a related field.
  • 5 years of relevant experience required, with at least 3 years of hands-on experience with mass spectrometry (preferably with Thermo mass spectrometers).
  • Expertise in proteomics sample preparation, data acquisition, and bioinformatics using mass spectrometry platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate on…
