Job OverviewModus Utility Group is hiring an experienced Directional Drill Operator to lead underground utility installations using Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) techniques. Key Responsibilities- Operate Vermeer drills, mixing systems, and tracking equipment (e.g., Falcon F5) for fiber installations
- Read and follow prints and drill profiles with high precision
- Manage mud mixing and fluid systems to maintain borehole stability
- Coordinate with locators and foremen to avoid utility strikes and maintain job pacing
- Ensure day lighting, potholing, and utility verification before drilling has been completed and assist as necessary
- Lead job site setup, operations, and cleanup—including trenching and restoration
- Conduct routine inspections and maintenance on drill equipment (rods, grease, fluids)
- Maintain clear, professional communication with crew, supervisors, and customers
- Document daily production, safety checks, and equipment usage
- Adhere to OSHA, company, and client safety standards
- 5+ years of experience operating HDD rigs in underground utility construction
- Strong knowledge of Vermeer drilling systems, tracking tools, and HDD best practices
- Proven ability to interpret utility maps, blueprints, and bore profiles
- Experience leading a crew and setting a professional tone on‑site
- Comfortable troubleshooting, adjusting mid‑bore, and keeping projects on schedule
- Valid driver’s license required; CDL Class A required
- Must pass a DOT physical and drug screening
- Physically capable of lifting 50 lbs., kneeling, bending, and working outdoors in all conditions

Full‑Time, Monday–Friday
10–12 hour shifts with overtime potential
Some nights and weekends may be required
Work LocationField‑based role based out of Avon, IN
Travel required to remote job sites as projects demand
