EV Technician Training and Shop Equipment Upgrades

As technicians, we have to learn every new technology that emerges at a breakneck speed. New fuel delivery system—go figure it out. New adaptive safety system—learn it. And by the way, let’s go ahead and change the propulsion system on the cars now, too. In an effort to go green and cut down on the usage of gasoline engines, the car industry has flipped independent repair shops, and now, an EV technician training program is more important than ever.

But you’re probably asking yourself:
Will EVs last?

The reality for technicians is that, whether EVs dominate the market or not, plenty of them are on the road. And the owners of those vehicles are looking for techs like you who can keep them running for years to come. Even if you feel reluctant to service these vehicles, you know more than you think you do. That’s where an EV technician training program helps bridge the gap.

While our foundational automotive knowledge still matters, we must build on it to diagnose and repair EVs and every other new system. We’ve done it before, and we can do it again. But this time, we need to commit to continuous learning. That means attending training, earning certifications, and staying current on EV systems.

To work on EVs effectively, you need to understand their unique systems. I strongly recommend that every technician complete hands-on EV technician training. These classes cover both the theory and safety practices behind EV work. You’ll find training through ASE, tech schools, tool vendors, and even online. When you handle high-voltage systems, there’s no room for shortcuts. After hands-on training, consider getting your ASE EV certifications. The ASE xEV High-Voltage Electrical Safety certifications share industry standards and best practices used by working techs.

To service EVs correctly, you also need new tools and shop upgrades. Some tools you already own still apply. But you’ll also need PPE—like insulated gloves, face shields, and voltage testers. Your shop should also invest in insulated hand tools, lockout/tagout kits, and lifts with the right weight capacity and reach. If you haven’t already, install Level 2 or DC fast chargers.

And don’t overlook a battery lift table—your back will thank you.

Buying this equipment might feel like a big upfront cost. But it lets you offer more services and shows customers you’re serious about EV maintenance. That builds trust and positions you as the go-to EV shop in your area.
