- Pipe fitting and welding: installs, repairs and maintains welded piping systems and components; reviews blueprints and technical drawings; measures, cuts, installs and replaces piping and components; inspects for leaks; performs preventative maintenance; troubleshoots piping system issues; completes installations (e.g., fans, pumps, heat exchangers, trapping stations, valving, and welded piping); addresses customer queries; cleans work areas after completion.
- General Duties (30%): technical support; ensures areas comply with applicable codes; documents regulatory compliance tests; inspects and tests installations; updates building drawings; troubleshoots field problems; may assist lower-level technicians; participates in emergency response teams.
- Communication / Record Keeping
: documents labor, materials and work performed; submits purchase requests; provides material feedback; creates estimates for small projects; informs customers when tasks are completed; escalates work orders as needed. - Other Department Duties
: participates in professional development and continuing education; attends meetings and trainings; interacts with other areas and staff; may participate on committees; performs other duties as assigned. - Major Work Characteristics
: reads blueprints and schematics; applies safety standards; follows codes and regulations; learns and applies technical skills; uses hand, power and machine tools; maintains a clean and safe work environment; performs basic math and understands engineering principles related to lifting and move of heavy objects; instructs others as needed.
- Minimum Classification Requirements
:
High school diploma/GED or equivalent; two years’ experience in maintenance, pipe fitting and/or welding; proficiency with pipe fitting and welding tools; basic understanding of plumbing code compliance; knowledge of piping components; valid driver’s license; successful probationary period; valid OSHA 10-hour General Industry Safety and Health card. - Desired Qualifications
: associates/technical degree or vocational certificate in skilled trades/maintenance; boiler operator’s license (low/high pressure); valid OSHA 10-hour General Industry Safety and Health card; AWS Certified Welder; basic understanding of university building design standards and project processes as managed by FOD Design and Construction.
Must be able to push and pull 70 lbs; climb and stand on ladders for extended periods; distinguish colors.
Unusual Work ConditionsMay work in hot, cold, dusty, or dirty environments for extended periods; may work in cramped spaces.
