Key ResponsibilitiesThe Estimator is responsible for estimating assigned “Electric Power” projects (e.g. T&D Power lines and Substations) and the upkeep of estimating systems.
Principal Accountabilities- Develop a bid schedule in consultation with Department Head; responsible for procuring and returning plans for projects to estimate.
- Prepare project estimates in a timely manner by engaging in detailed and accurate plan take‑off, and solicitation of appropriate material, equipment and sub‑contractor pricing.
- Update material pricing and labor rates on regular intervals to reflect recent changes.
- Maintain the estimating system, including software.
- Price change orders on large projects.
- Evaluate bid results to track pricing levels; upkeep project bid database for future reference.
- Evaluate completed job costs against estimated budgeted costs to aid in future estimating.
- Develop “rules of thumb” estimating techniques and criteria for budget estimating.
- Perform other general tasks at the request of the department head.
- Attend departmental meetings and social functions.
- Minimum two years technical education in engineering, construction management coursework or completion of an apprenticeship in a related discipline. Prior estimating experience in plumbing/piping industry preferred.
- Analytical and problem‑solving skills, strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication.
- General computer skills with strong working knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Word, Outlook, and ability to read CAD/BIM drawings.
- Comfortable with a wide range of project budgets and estimating 120–200 estimates per year based on size.
- Works in a normal office environment and makes site visits when necessary, requiring driving a personal vehicle; regular sitting or standing at a computer; repetitive typing and computer use; regular bending, twisting, light lifting; ability to climb ladders and steps on site, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Visits construction site in all kinds of weather to survey conditions.
