Fire Prevention Inspector / Investigator (2 Positions Available)

Hiring Salary: $88,620 - $105,236 annually DOE

Recruitment Period: January 5-16, 2026

This position is subject to a twelve (12) month probationary period from the date of hire.

At South Adams County Fire Department, the Fire Prevention Inspector/Investigator plays a critical role in protecting lives, property, and the community through proactive fire prevention, thorough inspections, and comprehensive fire investigations. Position

Summary

The Fire Inspector/Investigator is responsible for conducting inspections of new and existing buildings, private water supply systems, and fire protection systems to ensure compliance with applicable fire codes and nationally recognized standards. This position witnesses and evaluates required testing of fire protection equipment and water supplies, conducts comprehensive fire investigations, prepares reports and correspondence, responds to fire emergencies as directed, processes complaints, and participates in public education and public relations programs.

The Fire Inspector/Investigator is assigned scheduled on-call duties and must be available to respond to incidents requiring investigative services.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The duties listed below represent the primary responsibilities of the Fire Inspector/Investigator and are not intended to be all-inclusive.

  • Maintain working knowledge of Department rules, policies, procedures, the Policy Manual, and Standard Operating Guidelines.
  • Schedule, conduct, and document inspections of existing occupancies, construction projects, private water supply systems, fire protection systems, hazardous material processes, special events, and permitted operations.
  • Track, document, and maintain records related to the inspection and enforcement program.
  • Serve as a technical resource by answering public inquiries related to fire and life safety.
  • Assist with the identification and prioritization of target hazards.
  • Support Operations personnel with company pre-incident planning activities.
  • Teach and assist with fire and life safety education programs as directed.
  • Assist individuals, businesses, and contractors in understanding and complying with applicable fire codes and nationally recognized standards.
  • Support enforcement actions when voluntary compliance is not achieved.
  • Develop and maintain positive, effective working relationships with Department personnel, volunteers, reserve members, partner agencies, and the community.
  • Communicate clearly, professionally, and constructively in both written and verbal formats.
  • Work effectively in a progressive, team-oriented environment while demonstrating initiative and professionalism.
  • Promote a positive and professional image of the Department at all times.
  • Conduct fire cause and origin investigations and serve as an on-call Fire Investigator.
  • While on-call, carry a department-issued or approved phone and respond to investigative incidents within forty-five (45) minutes.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications and Certification Requirements
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector I and Fire Inspector II certifications (upon or within 6 months of hire).
  • State of Colorado Fire Inspector I and Fire Inspector II certifications (upon or within 6 months of hire).
