As a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) on Life Line EMS's Critical Care Team (CCT), you are a contracted employee through The 9 Line Company. Your role is central to delivering exceptional patient care during medical transport. You will transport and manage or monitor mechanical ventilation for chronically ventilated patients or, in conjunction with a CCT‑RN, for acutely ventilated patients in pre‑hospital and inter‑facility settings, as authorized by the local EMS Agency Medical Director.
You will perform the following duties within the prescribed scope of practice and applicable regulatory guidelines.
- Monitor patient physiological responses to therapy such as arterial blood gases, vital signs or blood chemistry, and lung function changes, and consult with physicians if there are adverse reactions.
- Transport ventilator‑dependent patients while maintaining and managing respiratory strategy and compromise.
- Work as part of a team to transport dependent patients in the ambulance.
- Set up and operate devices including mechanical ventilators, high‑flow oxygen administration system, and capnography monitoring devices.
- Follow specified parameters of treatment.
- Inspect, test, clean, and maintain respiratory therapy equipment to ensure it functions safely and efficiently.
- Maintain charts that contain patient identification and therapy information.
- Order equipment repairs when necessary.
- Explain health care treatment procedures to patients to gain cooperation.
- Measure and manage respiratory status in route and prior to transfer of care at destination.
- Minimum of two (2) years recent critical care experience within the last 18 months.
- Experience in respiratory, emergency, and intensive care.
- Strong knowledge of pulmonary function and pulmonary rehabilitation.
- Experience with respiratory equipment.
- Completion of an accredited Respiratory Therapy Program.
- Current RCP license and certified for unrestricted practice in the state of California.
- Current ACLS Certification (Required).
- Current PALS Certification (Required).
- CPR certification.
- Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Frequently required to climb or balance and taste or smell.
- Must regularly lift and/or move up to 150 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Must have close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Regularly exposed to extreme weather conditions.
- Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, electrical shock, vibration, biohazard and infectious waste, and occasionally radiation.
- Noise level usually loud.
