Under supervision, the trainee learns to set‑up and operate a Centerless grinding machine to grind external or internal cylindrical or tapered surfaces of metal work pieces to specifications and tolerances required.
MainDuties & Responsibilities
Under supervision of a supervisor and direction of a Lead person or Facilitator, the trainee will:
- Learn to set‑up and operate any and all grinders used in the cell, mounting grinding wheels, regulating wheels, and dressing them to specifications.
- Measure, mark and scribe stock for grinding and verify dimensions, alignments and clearances to specifications using precision measuring instruments.
- Set specific grinding speeds, feed rates and spacing per task requirements.
- Record counts and process documentation correctly, and maintain daily production logs using computer software or worksheets.
- Use basic machine shop theory to understand specifications such as blueprints and sketches and visualize product dimensions and tolerances.
- Participate in problem solving, team building and other team activities to improve processes, productivity, and quality. Use interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and assist other cell members as required.
Perform duties where property, tools, equipment or machines may be damaged or man hours lost through improper daily maintenance. Set up and calibrate grinding machines and learn to maintain and perform minor repairs.
Material or Product ResponsibilitiesEnsure accuracy of parts machined, visually and/or with measuring instruments, and check work performed for proper results. Work is frequently checked by trainer.
Responsibilities for CommunicationsMaintain accurate communication regarding quality of work and any problems or concerns that affect production schedules.
Safety ResponsibilitiesMaintain good housekeeping, know good machining safety, follow company safety rules, and use appropriate protective equipment and clothing.
Initiative and IngenuityShow initiative to learn the job and, as progress continues, solve problems related to setup and operation of grinding machines. Suggest improvements in workflow or equipment operation and take on additional tasks as needed.
Work EnvironmentWork is in a machine shop environment with noise and temperature fluctuations. Unavoidable hazards include cuts, bruises, finger and hand injuries, muscle strains, exposure to metalworking fluids and airborne particles. Protective safety wear and equipment should be worn as appropriate.
EffortPhysical: Able to lift up to 50 lbs, adjust equipment, hand‑feed parts, reach, bend and stretch. May require extensive physical exertion and standing/sitting for periods over 15 minutes.
Mental: Work can be repetitive but setup and repair are varied; requires reasoning to interpret basic specifications and organize workflow.
Visual: Close attention to detail, moderate eye concentration, ability to read precision instruments and visually check work pieces.
Salary$27.07 to $33.24 per hour. LG 8 training will be on 1st or 2nd shift. Perm shift 3rd shift Sunday through Thursday 9:00 pm to 5:30 am plus shift differential.
QualificationsEducation / Training: Demonstrated ability to read and write English at a level required in shop documents. Basic math skills, including fractions and decimals. Generally equivalent to ninth grade level.
Experience: 3 to 6 months of experience or equivalent skills in setup and operation of grinding machines, tools and equipment similar to those used by the company. Ability to read precision instruments and engineering diagrams used in grinding operations.
