Machinist 2/3 – 2nd Shift

Join Northrop Grumman’s Space Sector in Commerce, CA to work on next‑generation composite structures as a Machinist 2 or 3.

Responsibilities
  • Set up and operate Horizontal HAAS, DMG Mori lathe and 5‑axis DMG Mori milling machines.
  • Determine sequence of operations, number of cuts and method of setup.
  • Plan machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications and machining parameters; interpreting GD&T.
  • Measure, mark and scribe dimensions and reference points to lay out stock for machining.
  • Fit and assemble precision parts into mechanical equipment and determine material, parts and equipment required.
  • Monitor the feed and speed during the machining process.
  • Study sample parts, blueprints and engineering information to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products and determine product dimensions and tolerances.
  • Select appropriate tools, machines and materials to prepare machinery work.
  • Lay out, measure and mark metal stock for placement of cuts.
  • Observe and listen to operating machines to diagnose malfunctions and determine need for adjustments or repairs.
  • Check work pieces to ensure proper lubrication and cooling.
  • Maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout and machining procedures.
  • Support and implement new, customer‑focused processes in accordance with lean principles and practices.
  • Provide training and coaching to improve standard work, organization (5S), and housekeeping; act as change leader as required.
Basic Qualifications – Level 2
  • High school diploma or GED and 2 yrs of additional education and/or related experience.
  • CNC 5‑axis machining experience required.
  • Experience with composite, honeycomb, aluminum, forging and all hard metals such as stainless steel and titanium.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, production specifications, diagrams and technical drawings.
  • Experience with GD&T.
  • Experience following written set‑up instructions and/or performing unique set‑ups.
  • Experience with complex measurements and advanced shop math calculations relative to tolerances, dimensions, tooling and feeds and speeds.
  • Experience running machines and setup.
Basic Qualifications – Level 3
  • High school diploma or GED and 4 yrs of additional education and/or related experience.
  • CNC 5‑axis machining experience required.
  • Experience with composite, honeycomb, aluminum, forging and all hard metals such as stainless steel and titanium.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, production specifications, diagrams and technical drawings.
  • Experience with GD&T.
  • Experience following written set‑up instructions and/or performing unique set‑ups.
  • Experience with complex measurements and advanced shop math calculations relative to tolerances, dimensions, tooling and feeds and speeds.
  • Experience running machines and setup.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associates degree or trade school certification with a minimum of 5 yrs of experience.
  • Experience with HAAS GM2 5‑axis controller.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve unforeseen, unique issues as they arise in machining a part.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and disciplines.
  • Flexible hours, overtime and weekend availability as needed.
Salary Range

Primary Level: $51,400 – $85,600 per year.

Secondary Level: $61,100 – $101,800 per year.

Employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses reward individual contributions and company results.
