The Manager in Training is responsible for learning the duties of the Store Manager position and developing the skills required for a Store Manager role. Primary responsibilities include driving outstanding sales results through effective sales techniques, building the team, building customer loyalty through world‑class customer service, and leading the execution of company standards. This position is also responsible for promoting a safe and productive work environment for all Team Members, customers, and vendors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Uphold and promote a safe and productive work environment by following and enforcing all Petsense by Tractor Supply policies and procedures.
- Observe and learn how to build the store team through hiring, staffing decisions, Team Member retention, schedule and payroll management, training and development, succession planning, and performance reviews.

- Drive sales and profit through top‑line sales, merchandising initiatives, expense control, and profit/loss management while protecting company assets and reducing shrink.
- Grow the grooming business and ensure all pets in our care are safe at all times.
- Generate brand awareness through local marketing events, including Pet Adoption and community fairs.
- Lead the execution of Petsense standards through store presentation, inventory management, freight movement, pricing/promotions, loss prevention, and procedural audit compliance.
- Perform daily duties such as handling customer complaints, opening/closing procedures, bank deposits, operating the register/computer, and supervising cash handling procedures.
- Work with small animals (e.g., snakes, spiders, hamsters, amphibians) and ensure safe animal care policies are followed.
- Maintain accurate cash drawer and vault reconciliations daily.
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance; work scheduled shifts, including varied hours, nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Train on paperwork processing (invoices, schedules, product orders, returns, POs), sales forecasting, payroll analysis, budget review, and team member evaluations.
- Train on inventory management, pricing changes, budgeting, auditing, and live animal care policies.
- Minimum of two years retail leadership experience.
- Experience in profit/loss, scheduling, shrink control, payroll management, staffing, hiring, supervising, and counseling.
- Must be 18+ years old and possess a valid driver’s license.
- High school diploma or equivalent; ability to read, write, and count accurately.
- No required professional certifications.
- Effective communication with customers and Team Members.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ethical issue resolution.
- Time and stress management.
- Basic computer skills and math aptitude.
- Ability to perform and execute the principal responsibilities of a Team Member.
- Indoor and occasional outdoor environments with moderate noise.
- Indoor floors and outdoor lots are usually hard surfaces; lighting and temperature are adequate.
- Work shifts generally 4‑8 hours or longer as required.
- Promotion of a safe and productive work environment for Team Members and customers.
- Travel may be required for training, meetings, or support in other locations.
- Non‑sedentary; visible and accessible to team members throughout the store.
- Move, lift, and transfer merchandise up to 50 pounds within the store and outdoor areas.
- Stand, kneel, twist, crouch, squat, bend, stoop, and climb ladders regularly.
- Operate all store equipment (dolly, handtruck, forklift, baler, computer, cash register) as required.
- Read, write, and count accurately for documentation.
- Communicate effectively with team members and customers.
- Operate point‑of‑sale and other store systems confidently.
- Complete all required training and certifications (e.g., propane dispensing, if applicable).
- Travel and vehicle operation may be required for business needs.
