Lifeguard/Swim Instructor I/II
Join the City of Concord’s Recreation Services Department to work in the Aquatics Program. The positions are part‑time, limited service, and pay is negotiated based on experience.
- Salary: $17.22–$18.09 per hour for Lifeguard/Swim Instructor I (no prior experience required).
- Salary: $18.54–$19.48 per hour for Lifeguard/Swim Instructor II (minimum of two seasons of experience).
- Additional $1 per hour differential is available when teaching swim classes.
The Aquatics Program operates out of the Concord Community Pool, located at 3501 Cowell Rd. The 50‑meter, year‑round, heated pool serves approximately 124,000 swimmers annually and offers learn‑to‑swim, lap swim, recreational swim and water exercise programs.
What You Will Be DoingUnder supervision Lifeguard/Swim Instructors perform a variety of duties to ensure water safety, including:
Organizing, coordinating, conducting, and instructing courses in water safety
; supervising the pool; performing rescues; administering first aid; inspecting equipment; and maintaining incident logs.
Lifeguard/Swim Instructor I performs supervised duties, while the II is qualified to perform duties independently. All positions require a minimum of 20 hours per week, with shifts in the early morning, evening, and weekends. All candidates must successfully complete the City of Concord Lifeguard Training program.
Selection Process- Knowledge of current lifeguarding techniques, facility rules, swimming rescue techniques, CPR, and first aid.
- Instruction techniques related to aquatic activities.
- Proficiency in swimming and endurance.
- Ability to enforce rules, perform rescues, provide first aid, and maintain effective relationships with staff and the public.
- Follow oral and written instructions; prepare reports and paperwork; and instruct classes for all skill levels.
Experience: Lifeguard/Swim Instructor I — none required, previous lifeguarding or competitive swim experience is highly desirable. Lifeguard/Swim Instructor II — requires two seasons (five months or more) of lifeguarding, swim instructor, or swim coach experience.
Certification: No certification required at hire; candidates must pass an American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Course and complete on‑the‑job training. Minimum age 15 is required.
Additional requirements:
valid California driver’s license with satisfactory driving record for select positions; completion of TB testing and fingerprint check.
