Medical Lab Technician

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Core Lab Supervisor and the technical guidance of an experienced Medical Technologist, performs a variety of routine and specialized diagnostic laboratory tests on environmental, blood and body fluid specimens as prescribed by physicians and healthcare providers in the technical area.

• Associate degree in Hematology, Biology, Basic Sciences or Medical Laboratory Science or graduate of an approved program in Medical Laboratory Science required.
• Minimum one year of experience in all areas of the Laboratory or Hematology Department. New graduates from an accredited school of Medical Laboratory Technology are considered to have one year of laboratory experience in all areas of the Laboratory.
• ASCP or NCA certification required, or ASCP or NCA eligible with certification achieved within 6 months of employment.

• Ability to take action based on review of policies, protocols, procedures, and methodologies.
• Knowledge of basic laboratory methods and analytical principles in Hematology.
• Working knowledge of automated and manual laboratory equipment.
• Manual dexterity sufficient to effect venipuncture and safely handle specimens and calibrate equipment.
• Problem‑solving skills for variables in situations with limited standardization.
• Good knowledge of quality control principles.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
• Professional communication with patients, physicians, outside agencies, vendors, and staff.
• Computer proficiency.
• English read/write/communication.
• Maintenance of confidential information.
