Position: Library Technician - 8 Hours Weekly

Position Overview

The City of Concord Public Library is looking for an engaged Library professional for a part‑time position supporting the patrons of Concord Public Library.

Department: Concord Public Library

Type of Employment: Part Time – 8 hours per week

Schedule: Thursdays from 10:45 am–7:15 pm with a 30‑minute lunch period.

Starting Salary Range: $23.14 to $23.68 depending on experience.

Job Summary

Assist the public in locating information, interpreting the collection, and providing reader's advisory services.

Responsibilities
  • Provide reference and reader's advisory services for patrons; assist in locating sources and selecting materials; assemble collections of books for teachers; instruct patrons in the use of the online catalog.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of assigned areas of the collection; use standard selection tools and guidelines as outlined in the Selection Policy to order new material with budgeted funds; remove worn or unused books from the collection.
  • Perform circulation functions: check out materials; register new library patrons and renew expired registrations; collect and record payment of fines; place requested items on reserve; explain library policies and procedures; register and log in children for use of the Computer Center; record statistics for periodic tallies; sort returned materials for shelving by pages; balance monies collected; aid patrons in the use of the self‑check machine.
  • Participate in program planning and production; prepare and present Storytime; assist in planning Summer Reading Program events.
  • Create bibliographies on specific subjects.
  • Classify new children's materials.
  • Supervise pages in the absence of other supervisor.
  • Ensure the library is maintained in an orderly manner; monitor facilities maintenance and repair.
  • Oversee the acquisition and display of private collections in display cabinets.
  • Research books, songs, and finger plays for children's programming.
  • Provide staff coverage at branch library.
  • Select visual formats for the branch rotating collection.
  • Process intra‑branch and interlibrary loan requests.
  • Develop displays to promote library services.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Education:

    Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a four‑year college or university in Library Sciences or other related field; and, one year of related experience; or, any combination of education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of library policies, procedures, terminology, and materials.
  • General office procedures, including computer usage and applications.
  • Basic mathematical computations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
  • Skills:

    communicating clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; assisting patrons with various library services and operations; using a computer to enter and retrieve information; sorting and categorizing library books and materials in standard order; making change in money; recording monetary transactions using basic bookkeeping techniques; developing and presenting children's programming.
  • Mental and physical abilities: establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with library personnel and patrons; seeing and reading written material.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Perform the duties of the position while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, or crouching. Frequently lift light and occasionally heavy objects. The work is performed in a library.
