Lead Commissioning Engineer at Wunderlich‑Malec Engineering, Inc. – a 100% employee‑owned ESOP and top System Integrator Giant.

The Lead Commissioning Engineer will lead testing and commissioning of electrical equipment within substations, generator plants, and other high‑voltage facilities.

Major Responsibilities
  • Review specifications and engineering drawings to understand substation purpose and functionality.
  • Perform and witness critical tests (e.g., DC Functional Trip Testing) prior to energization and in‑service.
  • Direct crews during critical work junctures, including final commissioning and through startup.
  • Conduct all electrical testing, including protection and control equipment, circuit breakers, transformers, and other substation equipment.
  • Service newly designed and experimental equipment, instilling confidence in customers.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with customers, providing scheduling and meeting financial requirements.
  • Manage resources and services required to install electrical equipment.
  • Demonstrate safety consciousness during equipment handling and electrical procedures.
  • Maintain all service equipment, tools, and test equipment to meet ISO requirements.
  • Assist in developing estimates for client proposals.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
  • Proficiency in programming and testing protective relays from GE, SEL, ALSTOM, SCHNEIDER, SIEMENS, and ABB.
  • Strong understanding of AC/DC electrical diagrams, wiring diagrams, and one‑line drawings.
  • Ability to develop standard testing documentation, training procedures, and maintain project documentation, including certifications and calibration records.
  • Candidate should hold or be able to obtain NICET certification or equivalent.
  • Independent technical leader with experience guiding engineers/technicians, and capable of acting as a Commissioning Engineer on projects.
Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or engineering technology (BSEE or BSEET preferred).
  • 7‑10 years of experience in engineering, with expertise in three‑phase power systems, protection and control schemes, relay test sets (SEL, GE, Beckwith, ABB, Basler), equipment testing (circuit breakers, transformers, batteries, etc.), PQ measurements, and SCADA, RTU, and DFR systems.
  • Experience leading crews to test and commission new and modified substations.
  • Experience with rotating machinery, including generators and excitation systems.
  • Experience testing programmed RTUs locally and remotely for system operators.
  • AutoCAD proficiency and ability to travel up to 25% of the time.
  • Valid, unrestricted driver’s license.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions
  • Includes lifting, climbing, handling electrical equipment, exposure to noise, vibrations, and hazardous materials.
  • On‑site work in varied temperatures, confined spaces, and at heights.
  • May require irregular or extended hours and on‑call availability.

Compensation

Salary range $140,000 – $170,000 annually, plus discretionary bonus and employee stock program.
