About the Role
The Controller, Construction Accounting, is a senior finance and accounting leader responsible for overseeing all accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls for a growing construction and modular housing organization. This role focuses heavily on contract method accounting, job costing, and project based financial management. The Controller partners closely with executive leadership to ensure financial accuracy, profitability, compliance, and scalable accounting processes that support continued growth.
Responsibilities- Oversee all day to day accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and month end and year end close.
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and internal accounting policies.
- Manage construction and contract accounting using percentage of completion and completed contract methods.
- Maintain accurate job costing, project budgets, cost to complete reporting, and overhead allocations.
- Track labor, materials, subcontractor costs, inventory, and project expenses by job.
- Oversee subcontractor billing cycles and ensure proper documentation, lien compliance, and invoice accuracy.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements including income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow.
- Perform budget to actual variance analysis and provide clear financial insights to leadership.
- Manage company cash flow, working capital, projections, and short term liquidity planning.
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll processing, and payroll related compliance.
- Manage sales tax filings, payroll taxes, and required regulatory and tax submissions.
- Develop, implement, and maintain strong internal controls, policies, and procedures.
- Coordinate audits and work with external accountants, auditors, and financial advisors.
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and finance staff while overseeing daily operations.
- Identify and implement process improvements and support optimization of accounting systems and software.
- Collaborate cross functionally with construction, operations, and executive teams on budgeting, cost control, and planning.
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Five or more years of financial management or accounting leadership experience.
- Required experience in construction accounting and project based financial environments.
- Strong working knowledge of contract method accounting, including percentage of completion and completed contract.
- Proven experience with job costing, project budgeting, subcontractor billing, and inventory tracking.
- Advanced understanding of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Experience managing month end close, audits, and compliance activities.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and leadership skills with attention to detail.
- Proficiency with accounting software, ERP systems, and financial reporting tools.
- CPA certification or accounting focused continuing professional education.
- Experience scaling accounting processes in a growing construction or development organization.
- Background implementing or optimizing ERP or construction accounting systems.
- Ability to communicate financial results clearly to non financial stakeholders and executive leadership.
