PART-TIME LIBRARY ASSISTANT - MT. PLEASANT
The City of Durham is hiring a Part‑time Library Assistant for the Mt. Pleasant branch. The role includes circulation, reference, and children’s services duties, with occasional assignments at other branch locations. The position offers up to 25 hours per week with a rotating schedule that may include evenings, nights, and weekends.
Compensation and Schedule- Pay range: $16.22 – $19.38 per hour.
- Work hours:
up to 25 hours per week – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday: 4:00‑8:00 pm;
Thursday: 3:00‑8:00 pm;
Friday and Saturday: 9:30‑6:00 pm. - Schedule may change as needed.
- Provide customer service oriented assistance in circulation, reference, or children’s services.
- Assist patrons in locating and selecting library materials and placing hold requests.
- Prepare and present programs for children, families, teens, and adults; publicize those programs.
- Create and maintain bibliographies for reader’s advisory; design displays.
- Offer reference and reader’s advisory services to the public and homebound patrons.
- Shelf read, straighten, and maintain cataloged materials.
- Conduct scheduled library tours.
- Assist patrons with library computer usage and troubleshoot minor computer peripheral issues.
- Track and report relevant statistics.
- Assist with the material deselecting process and recommend materials for purchase.
- Handle financial transactions in accordance with County policy.
- Participate in outreach, marketing, and off‑site services.
- Coordinate inter‑library loan requests and obtain materials from other libraries.
- Coordinate volunteer activities and assist in volunteer coordination.
- Open and close library as assigned.
- Perform related tasks as required.
Typical knowledge of basic library procedures, circulation functions, and preservation of library materials. Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment. Proficiency in using library equipment, computers, and related technology. Strong interpersonal skills to maintain effective relationships with patrons and staff.
Minimum Education / Experience RequirementsGraduation from an accredited community college with major coursework in education, history, literature, or a related field; some work experience with public contact. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. The County will verify educational credentials; transcripts must clearly show the awarded credential.
Special Requirements- Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in North Carolina (may be required).
- Position may be safety‑sensitive per the Drug‑Free Workplace Policy.
Medium work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly; includes climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions. Vocal, hearing, and visual acuity are required for communication, audio perception, and analysis of written or computer data.
