SUPERVISOR: Building Principal
LOCATION: Fair Plain Middle School
JOB SUMMARY: Teach science courses, develop lesson plans, provide individualized and small‑group instruction, and maintain a productive classroom environment.
Minimum Qualifications- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsement (DX or DI, grades 6‑12) or eligible for a full‑year permit and BHAS Teacher‑in‑Training Pathway
- At least two (2) years of successful teaching experience
- Familiarity with virtual/online learning
- Ability to incorporate technology into the classroom
- Strong academic preparation and leadership ability
- Strong communication skills
- Proven ability to meet the challenges of an urban school district
- Master's degree in Education
- Five (5) years of successful teaching experience
- Teach science courses using the Board of Education curriculum and approved learning activities
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials that emphasize discovery and computer laboratory methods
- Provide individualized and small‑group instruction to meet student needs
- Plan demonstrations, lectures, discussions, and experiments; organize laboratory activities for optimal learning
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior for a productive learning environment during class sessions and field trips
- Evaluate students’ knowledge, skills, and scientific attitudes
- Maintain professional competence through district in‑service education and personal professional growth activities
- Communicate with parents and guidance counselors about student progress
- Administer or monitor group standardized tests per the district testing program
- Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and Board regulations
- Select and requisition instructional materials and maintain inventory records
- Identify student needs and collaborate with staff to address health, attitude, and learning challenges
- Supervise students in out‑of‑classroom activities during the assigned workday
- Participate in curriculum development programs as required
- Participate in faculty committees and student activities sponsorship
- Cooperate with administrators to develop evaluation methods in line with district guidelines
- Assist students in selecting and developing individual research projects
- Perform other duties assigned by the Superintendent or designee

Salary is based on education and experience, pursuant to the Benton Harbor Area School Board policies and collective bargaining agreement for positions within the agreement.
EvaluationPerformance will be evaluated by the Building Principal.
Funding SourceIf the position is funded with Title dollars, federal regulations prohibit promises of employment beyond the current fiscal year. If funded with state program dollars, the district is not obligated to fund beyond the current year’s allocation. The position may be dissolved based on funding availability and needs assessment.
Physical DemandsThis role requires standing, walking, sitting, talking, and hearing regularly. Vision requirements include close, distance, and depth perception.
