Job Description Summary

As a key member of the Finance team, the Tax Manager is responsible for overseeing the company’s overall tax compliance and strategy. This role manages all aspects of federal, state, and local tax obligations, including income, sales and use tax, business and franchise taxes, and payroll‑related tax matters. The Tax Manager provides technical tax expertise, ensures compliance with applicable regulations, leads the resolution of open tax issues, and partners closely with senior leadership and outside consulting to support accurate financial reporting and strategic business initiatives.

This position directly contributes to the financial health, risk management, and sustainable growth of Avante Health Solutions.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities
  • Oversee the company’s overall tax compliance strategy, including income, sales and use tax, business license, franchise, and payroll tax obligations.
  • Manage new state tax registrations and ensure timely setup for sales, use, and related business tax compliance when entering new jurisdictions.
  • Direct the preparation, filing, and timely remittance of all federal, state, and local tax returns, ensuring compliance and accuracy.
  • Manage resolution of open payroll tax items and serve as the point of contact with external payroll providers and tax authorities.
  • Act as the primary liaison with auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory agencies regarding all tax matters.
  • Research, interpret, and communicate changes in tax laws, providing proactive guidance on risks, opportunities, and compliance strategies.
  • Maintain and enhance tax compliance software, Avalara / Avatax, and ERP system integrations to ensure efficiency and accuracy in reporting.
  • Partner with finance leadership to review tax‑related accounting entries, reconciliations, and reclassifications, ensuring GAAP compliance.
  • Lead month‑end and year‑end close activities for all tax accounts, including reconciliations and reporting.
  • Provide tax planning, risk assessments, and recommendations to optimize tax efficiency and mitigate compliance risks.
  • Develop and implement tax policies, procedures, and internal controls that ensure consistency and align with company policies.
  • Support executive leadership on the tax implications of business expansions, acquisitions, or restructuring initiatives.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally to identify and implement process improvements that enhance operational efficiency in tax and accounting functions.
  • Assist in other month‑end closing procedures.
  • Comply with policies, guidelines, and regulatory requirements per ISO: standards and the Company’s Quality Management System.
  • Adhere to all company employment policies and safe practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience / Training / Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • CPA or equivalent certification strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years progressive tax and accounting experience, including direct experience with income, sales and use, business/franchise, and payroll taxes.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, multi‑state tax regulations, and tax compliance software (e.g., Avalara, Sure Tax, or similar).
  • Experience managing relationships with external auditors, consultants, and regulatory agencies.
  • Proven ability to assess complex tax issues, provide strategic recommendations, and influence business decisions.

General: Ability to maintain an elevated level of accuracy in preparing and entering financial information. Ability to maintain confidentiality concerning all aspects of business, including finance. Superb time management and organizational skills with ability to meet regular and frequent deadlines. Attention to detail required. Ability to work well as a team member. Must demonstrate sound work ethic, flexibility, respectfulness, honesty, and trustworthiness.

Must also be punctual and dependable. Must possess cultural awareness and sensitivity.
