Technique is looking for a Laser Operator (2D & 5-Axis) to join our team at our Concord, North Carolina facility, home to Technique’s NASCAR operations. Reporting to the Laser Supervisor, this role sets up, programs, and runs 2D flat-sheet and 5-axis laser cutting systems. It cuts and trims the sheet metal blanks, stampings, and tubing that go into our NASCAR chassis, components, and assemblies, in stainless steel, carbon steel, and aluminum.
The Laser Operator performs first-piece inspections, adjusts programs and fixtures to hold tight tolerances, and keeps the lasers running at peak performance to support high-speed prototype and low-volume production work on race-season deadlines.
The ideal candidate brings 2+ years of laser cutting experience in a manufacturing environment and can read blueprints and GD&T notation. Critical skills for this role are hands‑on experience with fiber or CO₂ laser systems (such as TRUMPF), CNC programming and offline nesting software, and 5-axis trimming of formed parts. Motorsports or precision fabrication experience is a plus. The right person takes pride in accurate first parts and keeps material moving to the welding and fabrication teams on schedule.
Responsibilities:
- Set Up and Operate Lasers – Set up and operate 2D flat-sheet and 5-axis laser cutting systems, including loading material, selecting nozzles and lenses, and verifying machine parameters for each job.
- Program and Edit Laser Jobs – Create, edit, and optimize laser programs and nests using CNC/CAM software to maximize material yield and minimize cycle time.
- Trim Formed Parts and Tubing – Build and set up fixtures to accurately locate and laser trim stampings, formed parts, and tubing used in chassis and assemblies.
- Perform First‑Piece Inspections – Perform first‑piece and in‑process inspections using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and CMM reports to verify parts meet print, GD&T, and NASCAR specification requirements.
- Troubleshoot and Adjust – Diagnose cut‑quality issues such as dross, burrs, and dimensional variation, and correct them by adjusting power, speed, focus, gas pressure, and part offsets.
- Maintain Laser Equipment – Perform routine preventive maintenance, including cleaning optics, replacing nozzles and consumables, and checking gas and chiller systems; report issues to maintenance.
- Maintain Job Documentation – Keep accurate job documentation, setup sheets, program records, and traceability information for all production runs.
- Follow Laser Safety Practices – Follow all laser safety, lockout/tagout, and PPE requirements, and keep the work area clean and organized.
- Train and Support Team Members – Support and train operators on machine setup, operation, and part quality expectations.
- Other Duties as Assigned – Perform other duties as assigned by the Laser Supervisor.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED; vocational or technical training preferred
- 2+ years of laser cutting experience in a manufacturing setting
- Experience with fiber or CO₂ laser systems (such as TRUMPF); 5‑axis laser experience strongly preferred
- Experience with CNC programming and offline nesting software
- Ability to read blueprints and understand GD&T notation
- Ability to use hand tools and precision measuring and inspection tools
- Motorsports, precision fabrication, or prototype manufacturing experience a plus
- Basic computer skills
- Strong attention to detail and mechanical aptitude
- Ability to multitask in a fast‑paced, race‑schedule‑driven environment
- Basic problem‑solving skills
- Flexibility to work overtime or weekends during peak race‑season demand
- Ability to frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds
- This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and reaching…
