Refrigeration Technician III – Sign on Bonus up to $5000
Job Summary:
This Operations position is responsible for managing the activities associated with refrigeration repair on industrial refrigerated storage equipment ranging from 100 HP to 3,000 HP, general maintenance and repair of regional facility refrigeration systems, and minor repair of electrical devices. Asset management is performed in accordance with IIAR, ASHRAE, ASME, EPA, OSHA and applicable State and Local Codes.
The ideal candidate will have HVAC/R schooling, RETA Certified Industrial Refrigeration Operator (CIRO) certification, universal EPA, and at least six years of experience with service/maintenance of HVAC/R and large ammonia refrigeration units.
Responsibilities- Perform inspections and preventive maintenance of refrigeration storage equipment ranging from 50 HP to 3,000 HP.
- Use working knowledge of screw and reciprocal compressors, electrical troubleshooting of common types of ammonia central systems, and control/alarm systems.
- Apply knowledge of controls, electric (high and low voltage) and PLC based master refrigeration control systems.
- Maintain the freezer and cooler ammonia system through scheduled preventive maintenance activities, including oil level checks, oil analysis, filter changes, sensor calibration, transducer calibration, compressor alignment, belt adjustments, and leak checks.
- Log time and materials into the CMMS on a daily basis in the form of work orders, P.M.s, etc.
- Check and change water treatment chemical levels.
- Oversee and manage refrigeration, electrical, and HVAC systems, monitoring trends, troubleshooting, and repairs.
- Conduct required inspections and reporting, including glycol underfloor warming system knowledge.
- Evaluate and implement energy management strategies and ensure product integrity through temperature monitoring and control.
- Complete small electrical repairs and welding projects as needed.
- Communicate daily with departmental management and maintenance teams regarding system operation and maintenance.
- Maintain housekeeping and cleanup of refrigeration machine rooms and maintenance areas.
- Interpret plans, specifications, and operating manuals for systems overseen.
- Conduct audits ensuring all required inspections and documentation are completed accurately.
- Provide cost‑reduction ideas and assist with implementing changes within the facility maintenance department.
- Perform duties in extreme temperatures, noise, dust, grease, high voltage and when working around ammonia.
- Adhere to all safety policies, procedures and governing requirements.
- Assist management in developing SOPs, training technicians, scheduling, and budget preparation.
- Participate in on‑call program and travel on short notice as required.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and inventory in a clean, safe, working order.
- Respond to emergency and safety situations to ensure employee and facility safety.
- High School diploma or GED.
- HVAC/R tech school preferred.
- Six years of industrial HVAC/R experience.
- Two years’ experience with anhydrous ammonia (R717).
- Valid state driver's license.
- Complete Sysco approved defensive driving program.
- HAZWOPER 24‑hour training required.
- Incident Command System trained.
- Respirator fit test & physical (annual).
- Powered Industrial Equipment Certification (within 3 months).
- Universal EPA certification.
- RETA Certified Industrial Refrigeration Operator (CIRO) certification.
- RETA Certified Refrigeration Energy Specialist (CRES) certification (within 6 months).
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret regulatory documents, technical procedures, and technical manuals.
- Ability to write reports, correspondence and procedure manuals.
- Ability to solve practical problems and apply basic math skills.
- Knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing software.
- Regularly required to talk or hear.
- Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and climb or balance.
- Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
- Must be able to wear a respirator and pass the fitness test.
- Sometimes exposed to wet, hot, extreme cold, humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, or confined spaces.
- Works non‑traditional business hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and on‑call.
- Requires occasional travel to other operating companies or corporate office.
- May be exposed to high, precarious places, confined spaces, fumes or airborne particles.
- Noise level is usually moderate.
