Description:
The Hersey Scholars Program provides a select group of ten Hotchkiss students with a unique opportunity to participate in a two-week residency program at Harvard’s Houghton & Schlesinger Libraries, the Boston Public Library, and The Massachusetts Historical Society. Students conduct primary source archival research in history, politics, cultural studies, economics, and philosophy.
The program takes place over two weeks each June. Scholars live in Boston and undertake research in the libraries and attend advising sessions.
Position
Description:
The Hotchkiss School seeks a Resident Assistant to support students in the Hersey Scholars Program. The Assistant, supervised by program faculty, will be responsible for students’ physical and emotional wellbeing. Duties include meals, breaks from scheduled study and activities, evening study, and overnight dormitory supervision. The Assistant creates a welcoming, safe, and friendly environment, upholds program guidelines, and models integrity and professionalism.
The Assistant will also collaborate with faculty on student research. Preference for candidates with background in primary‑source historical research and experience working with high‑school students in a boarding environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Participate in orientation before program commencement.
- Complete online training, including boundary training, CT State Department of Children and Families Mandated Reporter Training, and Sexual Harassment Prevention Training.
- Assist Program Director with student arrival and departure needs.
- Provide counsel, support, and guidance to students as.
- Eat communal meals with students.
- Monitor and support evening study.
- Follow guidelines for student check‑in in dormitories each evening.
- Communicate emergent needs to Program Director to ensure student safety and well‑being.
- Support other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience setting schedules and enforcing policies in a group setting.
- Attentiveness to the wellbeing of others.
- Expertise and passion for history and/or primary‑source historical research.
- Previous experience working with high‑school students in a residential setting.
Educations, Training, and Experience
- Some college required; bachelor's or higher preferred.
- A pleasant, friendly attitude and courteous demeanor.
- Attention to detail and precision; responsible and eager to work hard and adapt.
Work Conditions
- Physical ability to lead and participate in activities with full range of motion and mobility.
- Live in dormitories and supervise participants.
- Perform tasks indoors and outdoors.
- Residence for the full duration of the program.
