Position Title: Pre‑K‑6 Special Education Coordinator – Therapeutic Classrooms only
Reports to: Director of Pupil Services
Summary: Under the direction of Pupil Services, and in harmony with the policies of the Board of Education, and federal, state and local laws and regulations, the Special Education Coordinator will assist Pupil Services with the coordination of Pre School, Therapeutic Labs in Essex, JW and Valley, and Out‑of‑District Programs. The Coordinator will also perform related duties as assigned by the Director or designee.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct weekly check‑ins with classroom teachers, special area teachers, and paraprofessionals working with therapeutic special education students.
- Participate in Essex PLC meetings as appropriate.
- Participate in weekly Essex IDT meetings.
- Monitor behavioral referrals for therapeutic students and support proactive planning.
- Entrance and exit criteria will be shared with staff.
- Develop and implement transition plans (in and out of therapeutic) in conjunction with therapeutic and general education staff.
- Develop and share students’ academic and behavioral needs, including effective strategies.
- Participate in weekly meetings with the School Principal and BCBA.
- Participate in weekly meetings with the Supervisor of Pupil Services.
- Participate in a monthly meeting with the Director of Pupil Services.
- Manage referral process into Therapeutic Labs and transition out of Therapeutic Labs.
- Implement state/federal statutes and regulations pertaining to IDEA for special education and related services, FERPA, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act; facilitate PPTs.
- Provide professional development and consultation to all staff that relate to the department’s responsibilities under these statutes/regulations.
- Provide school‑based student & staff support for PPTs and 504 meetings by attending those meetings and/or case conferences as needed.
- Problem‑solve issues at assigned school.
- Maintain a collaborative relationship with special education teachers, regular education teachers, related service staff, and paraprofessionals.
- Assist with paperwork and daily staff attendance needs related to special education services.
- Take a shared leadership role in special areas such as oversight of state assessment, restraint and seclusion, PMT, CT‑SEDS, and/or ESY as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Connecticut certification in Special Education or Related Services.
