Job Summary

The Office of Academic Programs (OAP) seeks a full‑time Academic Advisor 1 to advise undergraduate students within the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources, including the Ratcliffe Hicks School of Agriculture. The advisor will serve as a bridge between the College and central University offices, support faculty and student advising, and promote student retention. The position reports to the Director of Advising and is based at the Storrs Campus.

Duties

and Responsibilities
  • Serve შეთ a resource for students, faculty, parents, and others about programs or academic policies.
  • Advise current, readmitted, and prospective students regarding coursework and graduation requirements; audit student records to monitor progress.
  • Advise on policies and procedures, including major/minor changes, waivers, and deadlines.
  • Review and recommend dismissal and counsel students on academic probation and difficulties.
  • Provide advising and procedural assistance to faculty and departmental groups as required.
  • Participate in admissions for Ratcliffe Hicks School of Agriculture and transfer decisions.
  • Assist in scheduling, registration, orientation, commencement, and related activities.
  • Assist colleagues in maintaining website, social media, and communications materials.
  • Develop and participate in recruitment and retention activities, focusing on under‑represented and first‑generation students.
  • Lead or support special programs.
  • Participate in planning and instruction of the RHSA First Year Experience course.
  • Track and analyze student progress, retention, and graduation rates; produce reports for departmental and College leadership.
  • Develop strategies for student success, including early intervention for at‑risk students.
  • Provide information about internships, research, and career development resources.
  • Use advising software and student information systems to maintain accurate records and support advising processes.
  • Review and update advising policies and procedures to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development toômage current advising practices and University policies.
  • Serve on College or University committees related to advising or student success.
  • Perform other related duties and special assignments as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field with three years of advising/academic support experience, or Master’s with one year of experience.
  • Experience supporting a range of students, including STEM, first‑generation, and under‑represented groups.
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse academic, socio‑economic, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Capacity to organize and manage multiple tasks independently and collaboratively.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and online student records systems (e.g., People Soft).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in higher education, counseling, STEM, or related discipline.
  • Advising experience in a higher education setting.
  • of academic policies, regulations, and STEM programs related to Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources.
  • Experience with Agricultural Education and Agri‑science programs.
  • Experience in retention initiatives or student success programs.
  • Experience coordinating academic events.
Appointment Terms

This is a full‑time, permanent, twelve‑month UCPEA staff position located on the main University of Connecticut campus in Storrs, CT. Salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s background and experience.

Terms and Conditions of Employment

Employment is contingent upon a successful pre‑employment criminal background check. The incumbent is expected to work occasional nights and weekends and hold a valid driver’s license or reliable transportation for campus travel.
