Location: Storrs
Power Plant Operator 2 (Rotating Days & Shifts) – 8-hour weekdays / 12-hour weekends (3 positions) – Storrs Campus, University of Connecticut – Salary: $86,289.00–$ per year.
Selected candidates will hold a permanent, full‑time position in the Facilities Operations Department, responsible for watching and operating the co‑generation plant, solar combustion turbines, steam turbine and associated auxiliary equipment. Rotating shifts follow an “8 plus 12” plan, with staffing organized into teams of four.
Key Responsibilities- Operate and monitor high‑pressure superheated steam, electrical power, and chilled water systems using a distributed control system.
- Adjust production and process controls within regulatory and manufacturer limits.
- Detect equipment anomalies, document incidents, and coordinate corrective actions with Power Plant Operator 1 or plant authority.
- Perform routine and scheduled maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting on turbine, boiler, burner, and cooling equipment.
- Prepare daily operational logs, reports, and incident reports; attend safety meetings.
- Support the South Campus Geothermal System and Chiller Plant operations during construction and opening.
Skills and Abilities
- Operation of large condensing and high‑pressure boilers and steam turbine generators.
- Industrial instrumentation and control systems, including PLC logic and SCADA.
- Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, physics, chemistry, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid flow, and combustion fundamentals.
- Ability to read and interpret schematic diagrams, piping, and electrical one‑line diagrams.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, and ability to use technical manuals.
- Computer aptitude for data entry and reporting.
- Three years of experience in a power plant or industrial setting performing operation, maintenance, and repair of steam boilers, generators, or related equipment.
- At least one year of experience at a cogeneration plant or comparable facility capable of producing high‑pressure superheated steam, electrical power, and chilled water.
- Current motor vehicle operator license.
- Lawful permission to work in the United States.
- Diploma from a vocational or technical school in a related field may replace one year of the general experience.
- College training with 15 semester hours in mechanical engineering or a related field may substitute up to one year of experience (half‑year equivalence).
- State of Connecticut trades license in Heating, Piping & Cooling, Electrical, Plumbing & Heating, or OE2 license.
- Experience with a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS, preferably AiM).
- Demonstrated supervisory or leadership experience.
- Experience operating 7 MW solar combustion turbines, industrial boilers > 50 KPPH, steam turbines, and gas‑electric‑steam driven chillers.
- Knowledge of 69 kV / 13.8 kV high‑voltage grid.
- Possess and maintain all required licenses, permits, and certifications as dictated by the appointing authority.
- Maintain specific education and expertise to meet certification requirements.
- Adequate strength, stamina, agility, visual & auditory acuity for performing duties.
- Can lift, carry, and push up to 75 lb.; climb ladders, walk stairs, and enter confined spaces.
- Work at heights, with high‑voltage, on rotating shifts, and under significant noise, dust, heat, and risk of injury.
- Will wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when required.
- May drive and operate vans and trucks of various sizes, including those with lift gates.
- Physical examination may be required.
